2007-08 Basketball Athletes of the Week

February 25, 2008-March 2, 2008

Rachel Mueggenborg, 5-6, Guard, Senior, West Salem, Wis.
During the WIAC Tournament this week, Mueggenborg played an important role in both of the Blugolds' wins. She scored 38 points in the two victories, including a career-high tying 29-point performance on Tuesday. In Tuesday's game she also hit nine three-pointers, breaking a school record that she previously held with seven. Mueggenborg also accumulated five rebounds and three assists. She is now fourth on the team this season, averaging 7.3 points per game and leads the team with 45 three-pointers.

February 18, 2008-February 24, 2008

Heidi Arciszewski, 5-9, Guard, Junior, Thorp, Wis.
With two more conference wins this week, a 76-67 victory over Platteville on Wednesday and a close 77-74 battle over Stout on Saturday, the Blugolds tied Whitewater to become co-champions of the WIAC. In Saturday's game, Arciszewski scored a career-high 30 points, shooting 8-for-13 from the field, including 3-for-3 from beyond the arc, and 11-for-14 from the free throw line. She also pulled down five rebounds and added two assists and one steal. On Wednesday Arciszewski was second on the team with nine boards. She also contributed four points and had five assists and two steals. Arciszewski is second on the team this season averaging 13.8 points per game and 4.7 rebounds per game.

February 10, 2008-February 17, 2008

Michelle Burns, 5-11, Forward, Senior, Eau Claire, Wis./North
While the Blugolds suffered their second conference defeat of the season, a 57-43 loss at Stevens Point, Burns led the game in scoring and rebounding. Burns scored her fifth double-double of the season with a game-high 12 rebounds and 13 points behind 6-for-14 shooting from the field and 1-for-2 shooting from the free throw line. Burns currently leads the Blugolds in scoring this season, averaging 13.8 points per game and rebounding with a 6.1 boards per game average.

February 4, 2008-February 10, 2008

Rachel Mueggenborg, 5-6, Guard, Senior, West Salem, Wis.
The Blugolds took back the lead in the conference this week with two victories over UW-Oshkosh and UW-River Falls. On Wednesday the Titans stuck with the Blugolds for most of the first period but when Mueggenborg came into the game late in the first, she turned on the heat and helped the Blugolds win 74-42. Mueggenborg scored a career-high 29 points in Wednesday's game and tied her own record of seven three-pointers in a game that she set last February. She shot 10-for-12 from the field and 2-for-2 from the line. She also pulled down five boards, tying a game-high with two other players and added two assists. On Saturday the Blugolds won 63-52 over UW-River Falls. Mueggenborg scored five points, added two rebounds and had one steal. Currently she leads the team averaging 1.50 three-pointers per game, which is also seventh in the conference.

January 28, 2008-February 3, 2008

Heidi Arciszewski, Junior, 5-9, Guard, Thorp, Wis.
In two games last week the Blugolds brought home a commanding 79-40 victory over UW-Superior but dropped one to No. 3 UW-Whitewater in Whitewater, 60-50. The Blugolds are now tied for first place in the conference with Whitewater. For the week, Arciszewski led the Blugolds with 32 points behind 11-for-20 shooting from the field and 9-for-9 shooting from the free throw line. Arciszewski also added five rebounds, three assists and two steals. On the season, Arciszewski leads the team averaging 14 points per game and has 58 steals, both of which are fifth in the WIAC.

January 21, 2008-January 27, 2008

Heidi Arciszewski, Junior, 5-9, Guard, Thorp, Wis.
The Blugolds were able to stay unbeaten in the WIAC with two more wins this week in two home games. On Wednesday Eau Claire defeated Stevens Point 62-54 and was victorious over La Crosse 60-53 on Saturday. Arciszewski led the Blugolds in scoring on Saturday and was second on the team in scoring Wednesday. Against Stevens Point, she scored 12 points including 6-for-6 shooting from the free throw line. She was also second on the team with three assists. On Saturday, Arciszewski scored a team-high 16 points and had a team-high nine rebounds. In both games, she hit some critical free throws near the end of the game to lift the Blugolds over both opponents. Arciszewski leads the team this season with 13.7 points per game, which is also fifth in the WIAC, and is second on the team with 84 rebounds and 55 assists. Her 55 assists (3.06 per game) are third in the conference.

January 14, 2008-January 20, 2008

Michelle Burns, 5-11, Forward, Senior, Eau Claire, Wis./North.
Helped the Blugolds remain unbeaten in the WIAC with two road wins and also became the 13th player in school history to top the 1,000-point mark for her career. Scored a season-high 24 points in a 62-54 win at Oshkosh, a place where none of the current Blugolds had ever won. Came back with 18 points and 11 rebounds in a 69-50 triumph at River Falls to increase her season total to 208 points and her career total to 1,011 points. In 73 minutes of playing time last week, she hit 13 of 25 from the field (52 percent) and 16 of 18 from the free throw line (88.9 percent). She also pulled 18 rebounds with two assists and two steals. She is the team's second leading scorer for the season with a 13.0 average. She has steadily increased her scoring average throughout her career, going from 10.6 as a freshman to 11.5 as a sophomore to 12.3 as a junior and to 13.0 this season. She is also the team's rebound leader this year with a 5.9 average.

January 7, 2008-January 13, 2008

Hannah Mesick, Freshman, 6-2, Center, Chatfield, Minn.
After losing two out of their last three games, the Blugolds bounced back last week, winning two conference games to take sole possession of first place in the WIAC. On Wednesday Eau Claire defeated Superior 54-21, holding the Yellowjackets to their lowest point total against the Blugolds in program history. On Saturday the Blugolds were victorious in a game against No. 2 UW-Whitewater, winning 63-60 in Eau Claire. Mesick led the Blugolds in rebounding against Superior and also added eight points, shooting 4-for-9 from the field. Mesick also had a game-high 16 points on 7-for-12 shooting against Whitewater. In 31 minutes of playing time, she also contributed rebounds, two assists and one steal.

December 24, 2007-December 30, 2007

Heidi Arciszewski, Junior, 5-9, Guard, Thorp, Wis.
Traveling to the San Diego Surf N' Slam tournament over the holiday break, the women's basketball team took fifth place of eight teams, winning one game while dropping two. On Thursday, Eau Claire lost to Gustavus Adolphus 60-65, defeated Ithaca College (N.Y.) 72-46 on Friday, and lost to host institution Point Loma Nazarene University 51-71 on Saturday. In all three games, Arciszewski led the Blugolds in scoring and on Friday and Saturday, was the game's leading scorer. On Thursday she scored 14 point, while Friday she posted a season high 20 points, followed by a 19 point performance Saturday. She also led the game with a career high seven assists. Arciszewski also tied for most rebounds for the Blugolds Thursday, pulling down seven boards. On Friday, Arciszewski shot 7-for-9 from the field (77.7%) and 4-for-5 from the line. Arciszewski now leads the Blugolds in scoring with 14.8 points per game and 38 assists.

December 10, 2007-December 16, 2007

Amanda Zenner, Senior, 5-9, Guard, Medford, Wis.
The Blugolds picked up another win on the road this last with a 76-53 triumph over Carleton College to push their record to 8-1. Zenner helped lift the Blugolds to the win, leading the team in points and tying for the lead in rebounds and assists. In 31 minutes of play, Zenner scored 14 points, pulled down five rebounds and tallied three assists. She went 6-for-10 from the field and 2-for-2 from the free throw line. She is currently second in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletics Conference in free throw percentage, hitting 19 of 21 free throws (90.5%) on the season. The 14-point performance is the second highest point total of the season for Zenner, which helped her increase her points per game total to 8.1, which is fourth on the team.

December 3, 2007-December 9, 2007

Michelle Burns, Senior, 5-11, Forward, Eau Claire, Wis./North
Winning on the road was the Achilles heel of the 2006-07 Blugold women's basketball team, but senior leadership like that provided by Michelle Burns has helped the Blugolds win their first three conference games, all away from Zorn Arena, this season. The Blugolds were 3-5 in the conference and 4-8 overall while playing on the road last year. This year, the Blugolds are 5-0 overall on the road already and 3-0 in conference road games. In road wins at Platteville and La Crosse, Burns led the way. She scored a season-high 21 at Platteville, hitting 10 of 13 from the field. She was one of five players in double figures against La Crosse with 12 points and also pulled a game-high 11 rebounds to help the Blugolds to a 43-29 advantage in that category. For the week, Burns was 15 of 25 from the field (60%), hit 1 of 4 three-pointers and 2 of 2 from the foul line. She grabbed 13 rebounds with two assists, one block and one steal. For the season, she is second on the team in scoring, second in steals and the team leader in rebounds. She is shooting 49.4% from the field and 80.8% from the foul line.

November 26, 2007-December 2, 2007

Heather Witt, Junior, Guard, Kendall, Wis./Royal
The Blugolds opened conference play this weekend with a 70-59 win over I94 rival UW-Stout in Menomonie. They also won 86-78 against Division II St. Cloud State on Wednesday. In Wednesday's game, Witt had a game-leading seven assists, while also scoring seven points. On Saturday, the Blugolds shot 46.9% for the game, while Witt went 7-for-9 from the field, including 4-for-5 from beyond the arc. Witt led the game in scoring with 22 points, a season high for a player this year for the Blugolds. She also had a team-leading five steals and was third on the team with five rebounds. Witt is now third on the team in average points per game with 11.7 and second in the conference in field goal percentage. She also leads the team with nine 3-pointers and 17 steals, which is third on the conference.

November 19, 2007-November 25, 2007

Heather Witt, Junior, Guard, Kendall, Wis./Royal
In the Blugolds' annual Thanksgiving Showcase this weekend, Eau Claire was able to control the entire game Friday with a 98-38 win over North Park University, but came up short on Saturday with a 49-56 loss to the University of Chicago. Leading all scoring on Friday, Witt scored 19 points while playing only 13 minutes, shooting a perfect 8-for-8 from the field and 2-for-2 from the free throw line. In the first period alone, Witt scored 13 points in 10 minutes. She also led the game with five steals and accumulated three assists. In Saturday's contest, Witt was the Blugolds' third leading scoring with seven points. She also pulled down two rebounds and had one assist, one steal and one block. Witt now has 12 steals on the season and has a 10.3 point scoring average.

November 12, 2007-November 18, 2007

Heidi Arciszewski, Junior, Guard, Thorp, Wis.
Facing a team that went to the NCAA Division III Sweet Sixteen last season and was ranked 12th in the d3hoops.com preseason poll, the Blugolds defeated Luther College 62-53 in Decorah, Iowa on Saturday. Arciszewski led the Blugolds in scoring with 15 and also had a team-leading seven rebounds in the victory. Playing 34 minutes, Arciszewski went 5-for-8 on field goals, including one three-pointer, and 4-for-7 on free throws. She also led the team in assists with three and added two steals in the season opener.
