2010 Football Athletes of the Week

October 25, 2010-October 31, 2010

Offense: Joel Sweeney, Tailback, 6-1, 241, Freshman, Tomah, Wis.
In a 20-14 win over UW-Oshkosh on Saturday, Sweeney led the game with 232 rushing yards on 42 carries, both of which rank seventh on the Blugolds' all-time lists in their respective categories. He also finished with two touchdowns and 20 receiving yards.

Defense: Kalan Stittleburg, Outside Linebacker, 6-3, 219, Junior, Neillsville, Wis.
Stittleburg had seven tackles on Saturday in a 20-14 win over UW-Oshkosh. The mark was the second best on the team and he also broke up a pass and had one quarterback hurry, which led to a fourth-down.

Special Teams: Scott Burzynski, Punter, 5-11, 181, Freshman, Stanley, Wis./Stanley-Boyd
Burzynski punted for the Blugolds this weekend and had a total of five in the Blugolds' 20-14 win over UW-Oshkosh on Saturday. He averaged 30.8 yards per kick and had two inside the 20-yardline, plus a long of 37.

October 18, 2010-October 24, 2010

Offense: Austin Neu, Quarterback, 6-2, 199, Sophomore, Iron Ridge, Wis./Hustisford
Neu had a career day Saturday despite a 37-28 loss at UW-Stout. While the Blugolds were down 31-7 in the third quarter, he recorded three touchdown passes to bring the Blugolds back to within six points (34-28) by the beginning of the fourth quarter. For the day, he went 26-for-36 and had 344 yards, which ranks 15th on the Blugolds' all-time list for most yards in a game. The 26 completions ties for seventh on the Blugolds' all-time list for most completions in a game while his 365 yards of total offense ranked 14th.

Defense: Ben Shea, Inside Linebacker, 6-2, 220, Senior, Manitowoc, Wis./Lincoln
Shea recorded seven tackles against UW-Stout on Saturday. One of his tackles in the fourth quarter stopped Stout on a third-and-10 on Eau Claire's 16-yardline. The solo tackle forced the Blue Devils to kick a field goal.

Special Teams: David Goodman, Wide Receiver, 6-2, 181, Junior, Neenah, Wis.
Goodman returned three punts and six kickoffs against UW-Stout on Saturday. He averaged nine yards per punt return while averaging 21.5 yards on kickoffs. His long kickoff return of the day was 34 yards. He also finished with 149 receiving yards to lead the game and had 305 all-purpose yards.

September 27, 2010-October 3, 2010

Offense: Joel Sweeney, Tailback, 6-1, 241, Freshman, Tomah, Wis.
Sweeney played a key role in the Blugolds' conference-opening, homecoming victory over UW-Stevens Point on Saturday. Not only was he the Blugolds' leading rusher (109 yards on 28 attempts) but he was also the leading receiver (120 yards on five receptions). Sweeney scored a touchdown in overtime on a 16-yard screen play that helped the Blugolds go on to the 20-13 overtime victory. On a 3rd-and-22 in the fourth quarter, Sweeney had a 64-yard gain on a screen pass, and later in the drive the Blugolds kicked a field goal to tie the game up at 13-13. His long rush of the day, 26 yards, also came on a drive in the third quarter that the Blugolds capped off by kicking a field goal to make the score 10-3.

Defense: Chad Samuelson, Safety, 6-1, 193, Junior, St. Paul, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall
With the game tied at 13 all and UW-Stevens Point threatening to kick a 27-yard field goal with less than 10 seconds to play, Samuelson was able to block what would have most likely been the game-winning field goal. He also finished with six tackles on the day (five solos, one assist) as the Blugolds beat the Pointers 20-13 in overtime Saturday.

Special Teams: Brandon Raciborski, Kicker, 5-10, 202, Senior, Eau Claire, Wis./Memorial
Raciborski hit two field goals, one of 23 yards and one of 19 yards, as the Blugolds defeated UW-Stevens Point 20-13 in overtime Saturday. His 23-yard field goal came in the third quarter and gave the Blugolds a 10-3 lead while his other came in the fourth with 3:24 remaining, tying the game up at 13-13. He also kicked two extra points and averaged 60.5 yards on kickoff.

September 6, 2010-September 12, 2010

Offense: Austin Neu, Quarterback, 6-2, 199, Sophomore, Iron Ridge, Wis./Hustisford
Neu played a key role in the Blugolds' 23-20 overtime victory over ninth-ranked St. John's University (Minn.) on Saturday. He finished with 219 yards passing going 14-for-24. Neu also had one long pass to Jesse Linsmeyer for 80 yards to get the Blugolds down to the Johnnies' eight yard line in the fourth quarter. The pass tied for the 17th longest in school history. Neu also had 12 yards of rushing.

Defense: Andy Neumann, Inside Linebacker, 6-1, 231, Junior, Germantown, Wis.
Neumann led the Blugolds in tackles with eight (six solo, two assists) as the Blugolds defeated ninth-ranked St. John's University (Minn.) 23-20 in overtime Saturday. Neumann also finished the game with one forced fumble as St. John's was driving in the first quarter. The fumble happened on the Blugolds' seven yard line and teammate Nate Johnson recovered to stop the Johnnies' 17-play, 73-yard drive.

Special Teams: Brandon Raciborski, Kicker, 5-10, 202, Senior, Eau Claire, Wis./Memorial
Raciborski put the Blugolds on the board just before halftime to make the score 10-3 in favor of ninth-ranked St. John's University (Minn.). The 38-yard field goal with four second left before the half gave the Blugolds momentum in the second half, which proved to be key as they won 23-20 in overtime. Raciborski also made two extra points on the day.

August 30, 2010-September 5, 2010

Offense: Joel Sweeney, Tailback, 6-1, 241, Freshman, Tomah, Wis.
In his first collegiate game, Sweeney ran for 181 yards to help the Blugolds to a 35-31 victory over Bethel University (Tenn.) on Saturday. Sweeney scored three touchdowns, including the go-ahead score late in the fourth quarter. His second touchdown came with just over one minute left in the first quarter after a 53-yard scamper. His 181 yards was one of the best opening performances ever for a Blugold freshman and he also finished with 34 receiving yards.

Defense: Kyle Thorpe, Safety, 6-2, 202, Sophomore, Stanley, Wis./Stanley-Boyd
In the Blugolds' 35-31 win over Bethel University (Tenn.) on Saturday, Thorpe led the Blugolds with seven solo tackles on the night. He was part of the Blugold secondary that held the Wildcats to just 115 passing yards.

Special Teams: Connor Meloy, Tailback, 6-2, 190, Junior, Madison, Wis./Edgewood
Meloy came up big on the special teams this weekend as the Blugolds beat Bethel University (Tenn.) 35-31 in the season opener. Midway through the second quarter, Meloy picked up a blocked punt and took it three yards to the end zone to give the Blugolds a 20-10 lead. He also returned the opening kickoff 30 yards.
