2006-07 Wrestling Athletes of the Week

February 12, 2007-February 18, 2007

"Lance Valiquette, 165 pounds, Senior, Auburn, WA"
Valiquette finished second at 165 pounds at the WIAC Wrestling Championships and earned an at-large selection to the NCAA Division III Wrestling Championships in Dubuque, Iowa March 2-3. Seed third in his weight class, Valiquette defeated Sam Laes of Lawrence 10-2 and second-seeded Joshua Ison of UW-Stevens Point 7-4 to advance to the finals where he would meet top-seeded and Tim Palmer of UW-La Crosse. Valiquette lost to Palmer, who is ranked second nationally at 165 pounds, by an 18-7 score. Valiquette won two of three matches on the day and improved his season record to 29-11.

February 5, 2007-February 11, 2007

"Dave Vanevenhoven, 149 pounds, Senior, Appleton, WI/Kaukauna"
Vanevenhoven was one of five Blugolds to win matches at 21st-ranked UW-Stevens Point in a WIAC dual meet in which the Pointers narrowly escaped with a 24-18 win. Vanevenhoven pinned Fred Lane at 149 pounds in 1:21 in recording the only Blugold pin of the meet.

January 29, 2007-February 4, 2007

"Justin Mc Auly, Heavyweight, Senior, Clintonville, WI"
Mc Auly finished 3-3 on the week including a second-place finish at the 10-team Blugold Invitational. In a dual meet at third-ranked UW-La Crosse Mc Auly lost a closely contested decision to Dan Laurant 7-6. In dual action against Lakeland Mc Auly was pinned by Mark Vanden Hoogen at 4:41. At the Blugold Invitational McAuly advanced to the finals with three consecutive wins. Mc Auly opened the day defeating Brad Ruh of UW-La Crosse 12-2, Joe Dhein of Division II UW-Parkside by pin at 4:43 and Adam Sutter of Lakeland 9-1 before falling in the championship match to Brian Borchers of Wartburg (IA) by pin at 2:16.

January 22, 2007-January 28, 2007

"Andy Johnston, 141 pounds, Freshman, St. Cloud, MN/Tech"
Johnston helped the Blugolds improve to 4-0 in WIAC dual meet action as Eau Claire defeated UW-Oshkosh 25-12 at Oshkosh. With the Blugolds trailing 9-6 Johnston defeated Derek Koening at 141 pounds by an 8-7 to tie the dual meet at 9-9. The Blugolds outscored the Titans 16-3 after Johnston's victory.

January 15, 2007-January 21, 2007

"Lance Valiquette, 165 pounds, Senior, Washburn, WA"
Valiquette went 4-0 on the weekend at 165 pounds as the Blugolds went 2-2 at the Terry Haws Duals hosted by St. John's (MN) University. Valiquette began the day defeating Jarret Hill of Ridgewater (MN), ranked fifth nationally in NJCAA Division III, in a 4-3 decision victory. In their second dual Valiquette defeated Jeremy Welter of Concordia-Moorhead 7-5. After receiving a win by forfeit against Regina, Valiquette completed his perfect day by defeating Chris Haugen of the host St. John's by pin in 2:10.

January 8, 2007-January 14, 2007

"Justin Mc Auly, 285 pounds, Senior, Clintonville, WI
Also selected as WIAC Athlete of the Week"

McAuly won four of five matches for the week including an exciting win by pin in the final match of the night to defeat UW-Platteville 22-18 after trailing 18-3 in a WIAC dual meet. McAuly found himself on his back in the second period against Ryan Rozek, an NCAA national qualifier last year, but managed a reversal after the 2-point near fall and went on to pin Rozek in 4:35. Last year, it was Rozek who gained a pin in the final match to give Platteville a 24-22 win over the Blugolds. At the Dan Gable Open hosted by UW-Oshkosh McAuly finished third at 285 pounds. McAuly won his first match pinning Hafeez Quereshi of Central Michigan at 5:11. McAuly lost in the semifinals to eventual champion and top-seeded Jordan Hein of the University of Wisconsin 2-1. In the wrestleback bracket McAuly defeated teammate John Berlin by pin at 1:45 to advance to the third place match where he defeated Quereshi for the second time winning by a score of 9-2.

January 1, 2007-January 7, 2007

"Josh Kasuboski, 184 pounds, Sophomore, Wautoma, WI"
Kasuboski won four of five matches to finish in third place at 184 pounds at the 29th Annual Matman Invitational hosted by Cornell College (IA). After receiving a first-round bye Kasuboski defeated Austin Hayes of Buena Vista (IA) 4-1. In the quarterfinals Kasuboski major decisioned Mike Christiansen of Coe (IA) 15-2 to advance to the semifinals. In his next match Kasuboski lost to fifth-seeded Jake Brinkman of Coe 4-2. In the wrestleback bracket Kasuboski would meet and defeat two familiar foes, first defeating Austin Hayes of Buena Vista 5-4 and than taking down Mike Christiansen 11-1 to win by major decision to earn third place honors.

December 11, 2006-December 17, 2006

"Andy Miller, 133 pounds, Sophomore, Appleton, WI/North"
Miller pinned Tony Kazik of Lawrence at 5:50 at 133 pounds as the Blugolds went on to defeat the Vikings 34-11 in the first home meet of the year for the Blugolds. Miller recorded two take downs and an escape prior to pinning Kazik. Miller improved his season record to 11-2 with the pin. The dual meet win extended the Blugold dual win streak to three matches and a 2-0 record in WIAC dual meets.

December 4, 2006-December 10, 2006

"Dave Vanevenhoven, 149 pounds, Senior, Appleton, WI/Kaukauna"
Vanevenhoven won both of his matches this week by pin as the Blugolds defeated 24th-ranked UW-Whitewater 21-18 and St. Olaf (MN) 34-12. Against the Warhawks Vanevenhoven pinned Matt Schuck at 6:47. At St. Olaf Vanevenhoven pinned Nick Espinosa at 6:28. Both dual meet wins boost the Blugold overall dual meet record to 6-2 and 1-0 in the WIAC.

November 20, 2006-November 26, 2006

"Lance Valiquette, 157 pounds, Senior, Auburn, WA"
Valiquette won his match at 157 pounds as the Blugolds lost to fourth-ranked Luther College (IA) 23-11. Valiquette defeated Ben Kissling 13-6.

November 13, 2006-November 19, 2006

"Josiah Miller, 174 pounds, Junior, Lake Tomahawk, WI/Lakeland Union"
Miller went 5-0 on the week including winning the Gold Division bracket at the Auggie Brute-Adidas Open hosted by Augsburg College (MN). In a dual meet against Itasca Community College Miller defeated Brady Bjornson by pin at 4:28 at 174 pounds. At the Auggie Open Miller started off the day by defeating Tyler Johnson of Southwest Minnesota State 7-3 followed by a major decision of Matt Schrup of Wartburg (IA) College 12-3. Miller advanced to the finals with a 4-1 decision over Cole Spree of Ellsworth Community College (IA). In the championship match at 174 pounds Miller defeated Brian Fisher of Augsburg 12-10 in overtime to win the Gold Division championship.

McAuly won three of four matches over the weekend as the Blugolds went 3-1 at the Lakeland Duals.
