Day One of Eau Claire NCAA Softball Regional Complete
EAU CLAIRE, Wis. – On day one of the NCAA Softball Eau Claire Regional at Gelein Field, Luther College (Iowa), UW-La Crosse, the University of St. Thomas (Minn.) and Ripon College all came away with wins.
In game one, Luther beat St. Scholastica 3-0. The Norse scored one run in the second inning, one in the third and one in the sixth. They had six hits to the Saints’ two. Luther’s Abby Christian led the game with three hits while she picked up one run and one RBI. Lexy Determan earned the win after recording 17 strikeouts, facing 25 batters, and had a no-hitter going until the bottom of the seventh inning. She improved to 22-2 on the season. In the second game, UW-La Crosse defeated North Central College (Ill.) 2-1. It was a hard-fought battle the entire way and La Crosse scored the go-ahead run in the bottom of the seventh to win the game. The Eagles opened with a run in the bottom of the first while the Cardinals picked up their lone run in the fifth. La Crosse finished with nine hits, three coming from Katie Pietrowiak. North Central had six hits, with three from Taylor Ryan. La Crosse’s Lauren Beres pitched a complete game and earned the victory to improve to 14-10 on the season. She struck out three batters. In the third game of the day, both teams finished with double-digit hit totals but St. Thomas beat UW-Eau Claire in the run category 9-3. St. Thomas scored once in the second inning and then picked up two more in the third. While the Blugolds scored once in the fourth, the Tommies answered back with five of their own to take an 8-1 lead. Eau Claire also scored runs in the fifth and sixth while St. Thomas also scored in the sixth. The Tommies outhit the Blugolds 14-10 but had one error while the Blugolds had none. Jess Freagon led the Blugolds with three hits while six St. Thomas hitters each had two. Bri Sitzmann finished with the win in the circle to improve to 18-1 on the season. In the final game on the regional's opening day, Ripon came on strong in the third inning and scored four runs on four hits. Jordan Hester opened the inning with a homer and Cassie Bilotto nailed a three-run homer later in the inning. River Falls answered twice in the bottom half of the inning as Nicole Lubahn and Hayley Buchanan scored but that was all the Falcons would score the rest of the way. Both teams finished with seven hits while River Falls committed one error. Stephanie Rieuwpassa earned the victory in the circle to improve to 12-4 on the season.
