Blugold Super Six
Sam Johnson has made significant improvement as a weightman on the Blugold track and field team and still has one season of competition remaining.
His freshman season, he was 20th in the indoor weight throw and 20th in the outdoor hammer throw at the conference meet. He improved to seventh as a sophomore and fourth last spring in the conference indoor weight throw, then went on to place sixth in the NCAA Division III indoor weight throw to earn All-America honors. In addition, he improved to ninth in the outdoor hammer throw in each of the past two seasons. He also competes in the shot put.
With his high finish at nationals coupled with a 3.93 cumulative GPA in math, Johnson joined an elite group of Blugolds as he was named a CoSIDA/ESPN The Magazine second team Academic All-American last year.
Johnson is an Honors Program mentor and a member of Alpha Lambda Delta, the national honors society for first-year students. He began an engineering internship with the Wisconsin DOT this past summer and will continue in that position this fall. He expects to graduate in May 2009, with his degree in mathematics, then complete coursework next fall for a physics major. He then will pursue a mechanical engineering degree at the University of Minnesota.
