Mon, Dec 2, 2024 No Event(s) Scheduled For Selected Date Blugold Super Six Sam Johnson For the second year in a row, field member Sam Johnson will be honored as a Super Six recipient. Johnson became the Blugolds' 63rd individual national champion this season after capturing the indoor weight throw national title. His toss in the 35-pound weight throw was 65-0 3/4, a school record and more than six feet further than any other throw at the national meet this year. He also took fourth in the hammer throw at outdoor nationals. Before each national meet in 2009, Johnson won the conference title in both the hammer and weight throw and was named the Field Performer of the Meet after the WIAC indoor championship. Johnson steadily progressed throughout his career to finish on top in his final season. His freshman season, he was 20th in the indoor weight throw and 20th in the outdoor hammer throw at the conference meet. He improved to seventh as a sophomore and fourth in 2008 in the conference indoor weight throw, then went on to place sixth in the NCAA Division III indoor weight throw to earn All-America honors. This past season he was named the 2009 U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association Indoor Men's Field Scholar Athlete of the Year while he was twice named a CoSIDA/ESPN the Magazine Academic All-America, most recently to the first team. Johnson was also a member of and mentor for the Honors Program and earned Dean's List and academic distinction recognition seven times. He was a member of Alpha Lambda Delta and received a Wisconsin Academic Excellence Scholarship. In the summers of 2008 and 2009, Johnson interned with the Wisconsin Department of Transportation. Johnson currently holds a 3.93 GPA and is just one capstone class away from graduating from UW-Eau Claire with degrees in math and physics. He is currently pursuing his mechanical engineering degree at the University of Minnesota. |
