Sun, May 19, 2013 No Event(s) Scheduled For Selected Date Sikora Finishes First As Wrestling Places Eighth At Invite Posted: Saturday, January 7, 2006 MT. VERNON, IA - Derek Sikora (Sr. -Neillsville, WI) at 165 pounds, won his weight class at the 28th Annual Cornell Matman Invitational today and the UW-Eau Claire wrestling team placed eighth out of 17 teams with a score of 55.5. The Blugolds had three members that placed in the invite; Sikora who finished first at 165 pounds, Joey Miller (So.-Lake Tomahawk, WI/Lakeland Union) who finished second at 184 pounds, and Justin Mc Auly (Jr.-Clintonville, WI) who finished sixth at 197 pounds. The host Cornell College ended up taking home the title by narrowly defeating St. John's 100.5-100. Sikora cruised to the championship match, pinning two of his opponents and winning by major decision against his other two opponents. Sikora then defeated Brian Daly, of Augustana, in the championship match by a 3-2 decision to win his weight class. Joey Miller won his second round match by major decision and then pinned his third round opponent to move on to the semi-finals at 184 pounds where he would defeat Shaun Miller, of Millikin University, by decision 5-2. In the Championship match, however, Miller would fall by decision 2-1, to Dan Willaert, of St. John's, to finish second in his weight class. Justin Mc Auly would win his first two matches at 197 pounds before falling by major decision in the quarter-finals. Mc Auly would then win his next two matches before losing by decision 16-9 to Ben Strandberg, of Buena Vista, to finish sixth in his weight class. Up next the Blugolds will compete in the UW-Oshkosh Open next Friday. The action is set to begin at 9 a.m. - JR - |
