Tue, May 21, 2013 No Event(s) Scheduled For Selected Date Women's Tennis Finishes Third For Second Straight Year Posted: Sunday, October 23, 2005 MADISON - The UW-Eau Claire women's tennis team finished third at the WIAC Tennis Championships for the second consecutive year today in Madison. The Blugolds came into today tied for second with UW-Whitewater, following the doubles portion of the tournament yesterday. Molly Hunt (Jr.-Owatonna, MN) finished second for the Blugolds at No.4 singles losing to Erin Fekete of La Crosse in championship 6-4, 6-3. Hunt started out by defeating Jenna Abbott of Oshkosh 6-1, 6-4. She then defeated second-seeded Maggie Seitz of Whitewater 6-3, 6-0 to advance to the championship. Liz Deprey (So.-Green Bay/Notre Dame) at No. 3 singles came away with third place for the Blugolds. In her first match she defeated Andrea Nauer of Oshkosh in three sets 1-6, 7-5, 6-3. She then lost to the eventual champion, Erica Schmelzer of La Crosse 6-2, 6-1. Deprey then came back and defeated Jodie Czech of Stout in another three-setter 1-6, 6-2, 6-4 to take third place. UW-La Crosse came away with the title after claiming three of the six singles titles and all of the doubles titles. It was La Crosse's second title in three years. UW-La Crosse head coach Bill Hehli was voted the Coach of the Year by the league coaches for the second time in his career. UW-River Falls' Megan Knobloch received the Judy Kruckman Women's Tennis Scholar-Athlete Award. Final team scores: 1) La Crosse 59, 2) Whitewater 53, 3) Eau Claire 44, 4) River Falls 36, 5) Stout 24, 6) Stevens Point 19, 7) Oshkosh 17. - JR - |
