Posted: Saturday, September 13, 2003
WHITEWATER - The UW-Eau Claire women's soccer team fell 3-2 to UW-Whitewater in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference opener held here today.
The game started with a flourish as three goals were scored in the opening nine minutes. The Blugolds scored first when Marcia Foltz (So.-Madison/Memorial) took a pass from Kacie Fry (Sr.-De Pere/Notre Dame Academy) five minutes into the game.
The Warhawks fired back three minutes later to even the score at one a piece. Eau Claire regained the lead at 9:00 when Maleia Damato (Sr.-Cedarburg) scored unassisted to put the Blugolds up 2-1.
After the opening wave of goals the game slowed down until the second half. Whitewater put Eau Claire away thanks to two goals from Christin Acklam at the 51:00 and 57:30 marks of the second half to give the Warhawks the 3-2 lead they wouldn't relinquish.
The Blugolds outshot Whitewater 14-10 but Whitewater doubled up Eau Claire in corner kicks 12-6. Megan Brady (Jr.-Dousman/Waukesha Catholic) made four saves on the day.
Eau Claire will be in action again tomorrow when they take on Concordia University. The game is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m.
