Overtime Goal Lifts Soccer To Big Win
Posted: Tuesday, October 4, 2005
EAU CLAIRE - The UW-Eau Claire soccer team picked up a huge win tonight over fellow conference rival UW-River Falls, when Emily Meisinger (Jr. -Green Bay/Notre Dame Academy) headed one in to give the Blugolds a 1-0 victory in overtime.
The Blugolds came into the match 7-1-2 overall, with a conference record of 3-0. The Falcons came in with a just as impressive record of 9-1 overall and a conference record of 3-1.
After a 20 minute delay at the start of the match due to lightening, the Blugolds and Falcons finally got to go at each other. In a match that was very intense, neither team could get anything going offensively. Both defenses were very aggressive to the ball and didn't allow much freedom of any kind. Allie Rivard (Fr.-Wayzata, MN) had two big saves for the Blugolds in the second half. After regulation, the match was still scoreless.
The Blugolds finally broke through in the 96th minute when Meisinger headed one in just inside the left post on a corner kick from Marcia Foltz (Sr.-Madison/Memorial) to give the Blugolds the win.
The overtime goal is the first for the Blugolds since last season's 1-0 overtime victory over Carleton.
With the win the Blugolds improve to 8-1-2 overall and 4-0 in the WIAC. The loss drops the Falcons to 9-2 overall and 3-2 in the conference.
Up next the Blugolds will host Loras College, Sunday at 2 p.m. at the Bollinger Fields.
