EAU CLAIRE - WIAC opponent UW-La Crosse fought hard against the Eau Claire volleyball team today in this back-and-forth match, but the Blugolds overcame the Eagles in five sets. The scores were 24-30, 30-22, 23-30, 30-18, and 15-10.

The differences were night and day for the La Crosse hitting percentages. In game one and three, the team hit .370 or above, while in the three losses it hit .150 or below. The home team hit very well today, racking up percentages above .365 in all games but the first and third, where it hit a .326 and a .163, respectively.

The Blugolds racked in the kills this afternoon with 81 total kills and three players with 20 or more kills. Jessica Groh (Jr.-Eau Claire/North) led the powerful hitting attack with 24. Molly Menard (Sr.-Eau Claire/Memorial) and Jenny Wolter (Sr.-Osceola) had big days as well with 20 kills apiece. Shanna Berger (Jr.-Baldwin/Baldwin-Woodville) had 29 digs to lead both squads while Carly Freiborg (Jr.-Sacred Heart, MN/Renville County West) had the most Blugolds assists as she contributed 72 of them.

This leaves Eau Claire with a 16-2 record and a 5-1 mark against WIAC teams. La Crosse is now 12-4 and 3-2 in each category. This also ends the five game winning streak La Crosse held on Eau Claire that extended back to 2001.

This eight game homestand ends Thursday as Eau Claire takes on Bemidji at 7:00 p.m. in the McPhee Physical Education Building. The Blugolds are 6-1 so far this homestand and 10-1 at home thus far in the season.
