Thu, May 23, 2013 No Event(s) Scheduled For Selected Date Women's Volleyball Claims AnoTher Invite Championship Posted: Saturday, September 10, 2005 MINNEAPOLIS - The UW-Eau Claire volleyball team continued their early success by defeating St. Scholastica and St. Olaf College in the Augsburg College Invitational and finishing first. In the first match of the day, the Blugolds met 4-4 St. Scholastica and won with finals of 27-30, 30-21, 30-19 and 30-16. The Blugolds hit in the .300's in all games but the second set where they posted an impressive .586. Carly Freiborg (Jr.- Sacred Heart, MN/Renville County West) again performed well with 57 assists. Molly Menard (Sr.-Eau Claire/Memorial) led the team with 21 kills while Jenny Wolter (Sr.-Osceola) was close behind with her 19 total. Defensively, Shanna Berger (Jr.-Baldwin/Baldwin-Woodville) led all Blugolds by posting 27 digs. Behind Berger and her digs, the Eau Claire defense held St. Scholastica to hitting percentages of .091 in the third game and .115 in the fourth game to allow a Blugold victory. A 5-2 St. Olaf team was the opponent in the final match for the Blugolds, where Eau Claire posted victories of 30-22, 30-27 and 30-14. Menard again led in kills by hitting 14 while Freiborg contributed 31 assists. The Blugolds had a combined 14 aces on serves and also held St. Olaf to under .300 in hitting percentage in all three sets while Eau Claire was over .300 in all three. Eau Claire won the tournament with a 12-1 record, as the Augsburg College Invitational winner is decided by win-loss ranking. Behind UW-Eau Claire was UW-Stout was second at 12-4, St. Olaf at 8-6, St. Scholastica finishing fourth with 8-7, Macalster posting a 5-9 record, Augsburg taking the six spot with 3-9 and Northland roudnign out the competitors at 0-12. The All-Tournament Team included three Blugolds consisting of Berger, Freiborg and Wolter. Other players include LeAnn Bierscheit of St. Scholastica, Lauren Eberhart of Macalester, Linnea Evans of Augsburg, Danica Finseth and Audrey Volstad of St. Olaf, Rachel Linbo and Jenny McDermid of UW-Stout. The next matchup for Eau Claire is against Stout at Menomonie on Wednesday. Action begins at 7:00 p.m. - PH - |
