First Day Of Tourney Finds Volleyball Undefeated

MINNEAPOLIS - Eau Claire maintained its perfect record through the first day of the Augsburg Tournament by defeating Macalester College and Northland.
In the first match of the day, the Blugolds posted victories of 30-11, 30-24 and a close 30-28. Carly Freiborg (Jr.-Sacred Heart, MN/Renville County West) had 37 assists and 5 aces, while Jenny Wolter (Sr.-Osceola) led the team in kills with 14. After the first day, Wolter leads all participants with a .536 hitting percentage. Eau Claire started off well with a .500 hitting percentage but as Macalester gained steam the percentages fell off to .235 in the second game and to .111 in the final dramatic clincher. The Blugolds played good defense as they held Macalester to percentages of -.111, .171 and .135 in each set, respectively. Shanna Berger (Jr.-Baldwin, WI/Baldwin-Woodville) led the team with 18 digs.
UW-Eau Claire had a strong performance against Northland, sending them down with scores of 30-10, 30-18 and 30-18. Freiborg's total of 23 assists again led the team, while Jodi Dunbar (Jr.-Platteville) led with 11 kills. Eau Claire displayed incredible defense by holding their opponents to hitting percentages of .000, -.059 and again .000.
The Blugolds are now 6-0 overall and 2-0 in the tournament heading into the second day of the two-day tournament tomorrow. They will face 1-1 St. Scholastica in the first match at 1:00 p.m. and 2-0 St. Olaf College in the second at 3:00 pm.
