Men's Track Competes At Blugold Open

EAU CLAIRE - John Schuna (Sr. -Hudson) won the shot put and Shaun Marek (Sr. -Waunakee) took first in the triple jump as the UW-Eau Claire men's outdoor track and field team compete in the Blugold Outdoor Open here today at Simpson Field.
No team scores were kept at the event, which included UW-Stout, Stevens Point, La Crosse, Superior, UM-Duluth, Carleton (MN), Bethel (MN), St. Scholastics (MN), St. Mary's (MN), and the University of Minnesota.
Schuna won the shot put event with a distance of 17.30 meters (56-9.75), nearly four feet further than the runner up. The throw is his best of the outdoor season and good for qualification to this season's national competition. Schuna also took sixth place in the discus throw today.
Marek earned a first place finish in the triple jump with a distance of 13.79 meters (45-3). He won the event by exactly 11 inches and also took fourth place in the long jump with a distance of 6.77 meters (22-2.5). Eric Johnson (Sr.-Schofield/D.C. Everest) took third in the triple jump with a distance of 13.43 meters (44-00.75).
Micah Hernandez (Jr.-Milwaukee/Wisconsin Lutheran) grabbed a third place finish in the 3,000-meter steeplechase. He finished the event in a time of 9:47.45. Adam Condit (Sr.-La Crosse/Central) took third place in the 1,500-meter run with a time of 3:58.67.
Matt Smith (Jr.-Buffalo, MN) took fourth place in the hammer throw event. He did so with a distance of 45.96 meters (150-09).
The Blugolds will return to action next Saturday for the Phil Esten Challenge hosted by UW-La Crosse. The even is scheduled to begin at noon.
