Mon, May 20, 2013 No Event(s) Scheduled For Selected Date Men's Track Takes Second At Viking Olympics Posted: Saturday, April 2, 2005 ROCK ISLAND, Ill. - The UW-Eau Claire men's outdoor track and field team claimed second place out of 11 teams here today at the Viking Olympics hosted by Augustana College (IL) in the first event of the outdoor season.. The Blugolds finished with a team score of 167, finishing second to host Augustana with a score of 213.5. Luther College (IA) took second with a score of 130.5 while Illinois Wesleyan took fourth with 122 points. Wartburg (IA) rounded out the top five with a score of 119. The Blugolds posted wins in three different events on the day. John Schuna (Sr.-Hudson) won the shot put event with a distance of 16.47 meters (54-0?). The distance is a new meet record and a provisional qualification into national competition. Schuna also claimed third in the discus throw, posting a distance of 46.0 meters (150-11). He finished behind teammate Ryan Brohmer (Fr.-La Crosse/Logan) in the event, who took second with a throw of 46.11 meters (151-3). Adam Condit (Sr.-La Crosse/Central) earned the only other individual victory for the Blugolds, winning the 1,500-meter run in a time of 4:00.89. The other Eau Claire victory came from the 4x800-meter relay team, who won the event in a time of 8:07.35. Jumpers Shaun Marek (Sr.-Waunakee) and Eric Johnson (Sr.-Schofield/D.C. Everest) were in close competition all day. Marek took second in the long jump with a distance of 6.70 meters (21-11?), while Johnson finished in fifth place with a distance of 6.46 meters (21-2?). The pair finished third and fourth in the triple jump, with Johnson grabbing third and Marek taking fourth. Johnson finished with a distance of 13.66 meters (44-9?) while Marek had a jump of 13.53 meters (44-4?). The hammer throw was also close between two Blugolds, as Matt Smith (Jr.-Buffalo, MN) and Brohmer finished second and third respectively. Smith finished with a throw of 45.81 meters (150-3) while Brohmer had a throw of 44.37 meters (145-7). Justin Wolfe (Sr.-Brodhead) took fourth place in the pole vault competition. He cleared a height of 4.42 meters (14-6). Jon Blome of Illinois Wesleyan took third place with the same height, clearing the bar earlier than Wolfe. The men's outdoor track and field team will be back in action next Saturday at the Washington Invite in St. Louis, Missouri. - DN - |
