Wed, Jun 19, 2013 No Event(s) Scheduled For Selected Date Women's Hockey Crushes Superior In Season Finale Posted: Sunday, February 27, 2005 STEVENS POINT - The UW-Eau Claire women's hockey team wrapped up the 2004-05 season in style, scoring the first five goals against 10th-ranked UW-Superior in a 5-1 Blugold win here today in the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association third place contest. Eau Claire finishes the season with a mark of 15-9-1 overall, a new Eau Claire single season record for wins. The old record was 10 wins set last season. The Yellowjackets finish the year with a record of 15-8-2. The Blugold win today is just the second ever in the history of the franchise against Superior. In two previous meetings this season, Superior won by scores of 4-1 and 4-0. Eau Claire's first ever win against the Yellowjackets came on January 18, 2003, a 4-3 victory. The Blugolds got the scoring started in the first period and never looked back as they shut out the Yellowjackets until just 5:30 remained in the game. Allie Campbell (So.-Plymouth, MN/Wayzata) was the first Blugold to find the back of the net as she took advantage of one of three Eau Claire power play attempts during the game. Campbell took passes from Karen Hebert (So.-Lakeville, MN/Holy Angels) and Christa Hubert (Sr.-Blaine, MN) with 6:59 left to play in the first period for the goal and a 1-0 Eau Claire lead. Neither team was able to find the net for the rest of the first and much of the second period, until Hubert put the Blugolds up 2-0 with 2:42 remaining in the second period. Laura Suppes (So.-Falcon Heights, MN/Roseville) earned the assist on the goal. Just 50 seconds later the Blugolds struck again. Tara Hayner (So.-Stillwater, MN) found the back of the net for her first of two goals on the night and a three goal advantage. Hayner didn't take long in the third period to score her second goal of the night, as she took a pass from Laura Brackey (Jr.-Oakdale, MN/Tartan) and put the Blugolds ahead 4-0 with a power play goal. Theresa Guindon (Fr.-Lino Lakes, MN/Centennial) added a goal midway through the final period and the Yellowjackets finally got on the board in the last minutes of the game to finish the scoring at 5-1. The Blugolds actually lost the shot battle with Superior 22-21, but goalie Jill Arendt (Fr.-Plymouth, MN/Wayzata) stopped all but one shot for the win. She finished with 21 saves on the day and 505 on the season. Amanda Schultz (Jr.-Stevens Point/SPASH) finishes the season the Blugold leader in both goals and points with 15 and 23 respectively. Suppes finishes second in both categories with nine goals and 17 points on the season. - DN - |
