Sun, May 19, 2013 No Event(s) Scheduled For Selected Date Men's Track Victorious At Blue Devil Open Posted: Friday, February 18, 2005 MENOMONIE - The UW-Eau Claire men's indoor track and field team earned a first place finish out of four teams here today at the Blue Devil Open hosted by UW-Stout. The Blugolds posted a team score of 225 with host Stout finishing second with 195.5 points. UW-River Falls claimed third place with a score of 119.5 while North Central University (MN) finished last with 15 points. Eau Claire finished with eight, first place finishes on the day, powered by two apiece from John Schuna (Sr.-Hudson) and Eric Johnson (So.-Schofield/D.C. Everest). Schuna blew out the competition in both events and destroyed his season-best throw in the weight throw. He won the event with a toss of 17.63 meters (57-10?), by far good for national competition. His previous season-long was 16.94 meters (55-7). Teammate Matt Smith (Jr.-Buffalo, MN) took a distant second in the weight throw with a distance of 15.05 meters (49-4?). Schuna did not top his longest throw of the season in the shot put but still won the event with a throw of 16.81 meters (55-2). His season best is 17.58 meters (57-8 ?), more than enough for an automatic qualification into national competition. Again a Blugold finished a distant second to Schuna, as Al Oleson (So.-Wausau/West) posted a throw of 14.98 meters (49-1?). The throw was his best throw of the season. Johnson won both the long and triple jump competitions, though not quite as decisively as Schuna. He took first in the long jump with a distance of 6.37 meters (20-10?), just 0.02 meters ahead of second place Jesse Wendt of Stout. Johnson won the triple jump with a distance of 13.54 meters (44-5?), tied for the best jump on the team this season. The distance is his best of the year and was .09 meters further than teammate Shaun Marek (Sr.-Waunakee), who took second in the event. Nick Aliota (So.-Brookfield/Central) emerged victorious in the 200-meter dash with a time of 22.95 seconds, topping teammate Adam Sturgis (So.-Bruce) by 1/100th of a second. The times are now the first and second best times this season by Blugolds in that event. Nate Hall (Jr.-Green Bay/Preble) earned a win in the 3,000-meter run with a score of 9:15.17. The time was nearly four seconds better than the runner up. Justin Wolfe (Sr.-Brodhead) earned the final individual victory for the Blugolds, winning the pole vault with a height of 4.53 meters (14-10?). The height is a new season best by .01 meters but is still short of a provisional height for national competition. The Blugolds' 4x400-meter relay team came away with a win on the day, finishing in a time of 3:29.48. Eau Claire will be back in action next Saturday when they head to Stevens Point for the Pointer Invite. - DN - |
