MENOMONIE - The UW-Eau Claire women's track and field team finished in second place out of four teams at the Blue Devil Open, hosted by UW-Stout here today in Menomonie.

The Blugolds finished with 205.5 points, behind only host Stout with 231.5 points. UW-River Falls took third place with 87 while North Central University (MN) took fourth with a team score of 13.

Eau Claire earned seven, first-place finishes on the day, all of them coming in track events. Ashley Nelson (Sr.-Darwin, MN/Litchfield) earned two victories on the day, winning the 55-meter dash in a time of 7.54 seconds and the 200-meter dash in a time of 26.91 seconds. She posted the fastest time in the 55-meter dash preliminaries and bested that time by 3/100ths of a second for the win. The time is her best of the season in that event while her time in the 200-meter dash is the best on the Blugold roster this season by more than half of a second.

Kallie Krueger (Sr.-Fall Creek) earned a win in the 400-meter dash, topping teammate Christina Locke (So.-Racine/Horlick) by 2/100ths of a second. Krueger crossed the finish line with a time of 1:03.01 while Locke finished in 1:03.03. Kristin Becker of Stout finished third more than six seconds behind the Blugold tandem.

Sarah Kasbian-Larson (Sr.-East Peoria, IL/E.C.P.H.S.) took home first-place in the one-mile run with a time of 5:24.99, more than four seconds ahead of runner up Stephanie Nichols of Stout. The time is Kasabian-Larson's best of the season by nearly 10 seconds.

Despite the victory in the one-mile run, Kasabian-Larson was unable to best Molly Warner (Fr.-Mosinee) in the 3,000-meter run. Warner won the event with a time of 10:42.23 while Kasabian-Larson finished second in 10:52.84. Warner's winning time is the best on the season for Eau Claire, topping Kasabian Larson's mark of 10:52.44 on January 15.

Jen Stafslien (Sr.-Onalaska/West Salem) continued her phenomenal season with a win in the 55-meter hurdles. She posted the best time in the preliminaries and shaved 3/100ths of a second in the final for a winning time of 8.54 seconds, a provisionally qualifying time for national competition. The time is 3/100ths of a second short of her best time this season. Teammate Liz Faller (So.-Marinette/Luther College) took second in the event with a time of 8.74 seconds.

Stafslien took second in both the long and triple jump events, finishing runner up to Stout's Laura Verdegan in both events. She posted a provisionally qualifying jump of 11.35 meters (37-3) in the triple jump but was well short of Verdegan's jump of 11.64 meters (38-2?).

The Blugolds' 4x200-meter relay team also earned a victory, topping Stout with a time of 1:48.68. The Blue Devils posted a time of 1:49.87 in the event.

The Blugolds will be back in action next Friday when they battle St. Olaf in Northfield, Minnesota.
