Posted: Tuesday, February 1, 2005
EAU CLAIRE - The UW-Eau Claire women's basketball avenged a last second loss to UW-Whitewater earlier this year with a 70-57 win over the Warhawks here tonight at Zorn Arena.
The Blugolds opened up the second half stretching a 29-26 halftime lead to 45-30 with a 16-4 run. Rachel Becker (Jr.-Gilmanton), Jessica Dickey (Sr.-White Bear Lake, MN/Cretin-Derham Hall) and Michelle Burns (Fr.-Eau Claire/North) scored all 16 points during the run.
Whitewater closed to within 11 at 50-39 but would get no closer as Eau Claire went on an 8-0 run to go up a game-high 19 points with 5:37 left in regulation.
Burns led the Blugolds with a career-high 20 points while Dickey continued her strong production off the bench with 19. Becker added 14 points, seven assists, six boards and three steals.
Katie Murphy (Sr.-La Crosse/Aquinas) moved into sixth place on the all-time career Blugold assist list with her three assists tonight. Murphy surpassed Sue Christiansen with her 325 career assists and is just three assists short of moving into fifth all-time.
The game started off with both teams exchanging baskets highlighted by four lead changes and five ties in the opening six minutes of the game. Eau Claire went up for good with a 10-2 run to go up 20-14. The Blugolds would push the lead to a half-high eight at 28-20 with 4:15 remaining.
Eau Claire improves to 7-5 in Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play and 14-7 overall with the win. Whitewater falls to 6-6 in the conference and 13-8 overall.
The Blugolds will be in action next when they travel to Stevens Point Saturday as part of a doubleheader. The game is scheduled to tip off at 3 p.m.
