Men, Women Claim First At Blugold Open

EAU CLAIRE - The UW-Eau Claire men's and women's indoor track and field teams each took first place at the 2005 Blugold Open, held today in the Ade Olson Addition of the McPhee Physical Education Center.

The Blugold men were split up into two squads, with the blue team earning first place with 155 points. Bethel University (MN) claimed second place with 142 points followed by Eau Claire's gold team with 108 points. PrimeTime Elite, St. Mary's (MN), KBD Track Club and UM-Duluth rounded out the bunch.

The Eau Claire men finished the event with nine first place finishes, headed by John Schuna (Sr.-Hudson) who won the shot put and the weight throw competitions. His throw of 16.61meters earned him first in the shot put while a throw of 16.52 meter was good for first in the weight throw.

Other field event winners included Shaun Marek (Sr.-Waunakee) and Justin Wolfe (Sr.-Brodhead). Marek earned a victory in the triple jump with a distance of 13.05 meters while Wolfe claimed first in the pole vault, clearing a height of 4.34 meters.

On the track side the men performed very well, earning five first place finishes. Dustin Sheehy (Fr.-West Salem) grabbed first in the 55-meter dash with a time of 6.86 seconds while Nick Aliota (So.-Brookfield/Central) was the winner of the 55-meter hurdles with a time of 8.10 seconds.

Adam Condit (Sr.-La Crosse/Central) earned a victory in the 800-meter run, finishing in a time of 1:59.54 while Adam Sturgis (So.-Bruce) grabbed the final individual win for Eau Claire, taking first in the 200-meter dash in a time of 23.41. The men's 4x200-meter relay earned the final victory for the Blugolds.

The women's team tallied five first-place finishes en route to their win at the Blugold Open. Eau Claire finished with 172 points while Winona State (MN) was right behind them with 168.50 points. St. Mary's was third with 76.50 while St. Thomas, Bethel and PrimeTime Elite rounded out the group.


Tawny Johnson (Fr.-Baldwin/Baldwin-Woodville) took first place in the 55-meter dash, earning the victory with a time of 7.59 seconds. Jane-Marie Ovanin (Jr.-Amherst) earned a victory in the 1500-meter run with a time of 5:04.06.

Christina Locke (So.-Racine/Horlick) and Molly Warner (Fr.-Mosinee) earned the final two victories on the track side for the Blugolds. Locke won the 800-meter run with a time of 2:21.33 while Warner won the 3000-meter run in a time of 10:53.38.

The lone field victory of the meet came in the pole vault, as Stephanie Barnes (So.-Sauk City/Sauk Prairie) won the event with a height of 3.41 meters.

The Blugold women will be in action next Friday at the UW-Stout Invite while the men will be back in action next Saturday at UW-Whitewater.
