Tue, Dec 3, 2024 No Event(s) Scheduled For Selected Date Women's Hockey Sweeps Finlandia By: Ashley Hofer, Sports Information Student HANCOCK, Mich. (UWECBlugolds.com) - The UW-Eau Claire women's hockey team followed up last night's shutout win over the Lions with a 4-1 victory today, completing the weekend sweep of Finlandia University (Mich.). Kristin Faber (Sr.-Austin, Minn.) – with help from Toni Simones (Jr.-Rosemount, Minn./South St. Paul) – knocked in the first goal for the Blugolds on a power play 14:44 into the game. The score, Faber’s ninth of the year, presented the Blugolds with a one-goal advantage the team carried into the final period. Though scoring was limited in the first two periods, the teams made up for it in the third. Emily Haluska (So.-Stevens Point, Wis./SPASH), assisted by Dani Kerr (So.-Little Canada, Minn./Roseville), tallied a goal about three minutes into the final segment to put the Blugolds up 2-0. Finlandia scored its first goal of the afternoon with three minutes left in the game, but Eau Claire quickly answered. Kerr and Simones each drilled the puck into the back of the net in the two minutes that followed, driving the Blugolds to the 4-1 win. Eau Claire dominated the shot count, making 45 compared to Finlandia’s 11. Mara Stormer (So.-Waunakee, Wis.), who played goalie for just under 40 minutes of play, saved eight of Finlandia’s shots in the second and third periods to earn the win. The Blugolds improve to 8-5-1 after the victory while going to 5-4-1 in the conference. The win is Eau Claire’s third consecutive and keeps the team undefeated in 2011. The Blugolds will look to make it four straight wins this Wednesday, Jan. 12 with an away game against the University of St. Thomas (Minn.). Game time is set for 7 p.m. |
