EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (UWECBlugolds.com) - The No. 14 UW-Eau Claire men's hockey team showed its scoring strength and captured its fifth consecutive win by defeating UW-Stevens Point 4-2 at the Hobbs Ice Center tonight.

Scores came in pairs for the teams, with Eau Claire taking a 2-0 lead shortly into the second period. Tyler Romasco (Jr.-Perry, Ohio), assisted by John Kearns (Sr.-Park Ridge, Ill./Maine South), nailed his seventh goal of the year midway through the first. To follow it up, Kurt Weston (So.-Roseau, Minn.) – this past week’s WIAC athlete of the week – notched his seventh goal 5:06 in to the second period. But Stevens Point kept it close in the middle segment, getting on the board with a power play goal the 7:54 mark and actually tying the game with another goal four minutes later.

Eau Claire regrouped and Jordan Singer (So.-Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial) – with Tyler Jundt (Jr.-Williston, N.D.) on the assist – made the go-ahead goal with four minutes remaining in the period. Late in the third, Jon Waggoner (Fr.-Fairbanks, Alaska/Lathrop) closed out the scoring and recorded his first goal of the season en route to the Blugold victory.

The Pointers actually slightly outshot the Blugolds 36-33. But goalie Brandon Stephenson (So.-Saline, Mich.), who played the entire game, made 34 saves – 15 in the first period alone – to pick up his eighth win of the year.

Tonight’s four goals boosts Eau Claire’s season total to 41, an average of 3.42 per game. This ranks second in the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association, trailing only UW-Stout. The Blue Devils have averaged 3.6 goals in their 13 games.

The win improves Eau Claire’s record to 8-5 overall and 5-4 in the NCHA while Stevens Point falls to 2-7 in the conference. The Blugolds have now won five games in a row.

Eau Claire will look to extend its winning streak in another game against Stevens Point tomorrow night. The repeat matchup is set to start at 7 p.m. in the Hobbs Ice Center.
