EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (UWECBlugolds.com) - The UW-Eau Claire soccer team scored just one goal, but it was enough to push the Blugolds past UW-Stevens Point in double overtime for the 1-0 victory today at Bollinger Fields.

The game-winning goal didn’t come until the 102:08 minute mark of double overtime. During Jamie Schiesel's (Sr.-Plymouth, Minn./Armstrong) corner kick, the ball bounced off Kara Ryan (Fr.-Plymouth, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong) and into the path of Shyla Gilbertson (So.-Waunakee, Wis.). Gilbertson headed the ball into the Pointer net, earning her third goal of the season and a final regular season win for the Blugolds.

Though there wasn’t any scoring in the two periods of regulation and the first overtime segment, Stevens Point outshot the Blugolds 19-14 throughout the game. Goalie Amanda Hakala (So.-Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater Area) played for the entirety of the match and made 10 of Eau Claire’s 11 saves.

The win improves the Blugolds to 12-6-1 overall and 6-1-1 in the WIAC. Today’s victory also handed the Pointers their first conference loss of the season and only second overall defeat, as they fell to 7-1 in the conference.

Earlier last week, the Pointers were awarded at least a share of the WIAC title. Depending on this evening’s match between UW-Whitewater and UW-La Crosse, Eau Claire will enter the tournament as either the No. 2 or No. 3 seed. The first round of the WIAC competition is set to begin Tuesday at 2 p.m.
