Tue, May 21, 2013 No Event(s) Scheduled For Selected Date Verona's Allie Stone to Play Soccer For UW-Eau Claire By: Tim Petermann, Athletics Consultant EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (UWECBlugolds.com) - Allie Stone, a midfielder who helped lead Verona to its first-ever WIAA Division I state championship last month, will continue her career as a student-athlete at UW-Eau Claire, veteran Blugold soccer coach Sean Yengo has announced. Stone scored one goal in each of Verona's three state tournament games including two game-winners as the Wildcats finished the season with a 23-3 record. Verona beat perennial state qualifier Mequon Homestead, 2-0, in the title game after getting past Neenah, 3-2, and Wausau East, 5-0, in the first two state tourney games. The Wildcats advanced to the state tournament with a 2-0 decision over Middleton in the sectional final. Stone was a four-year varsity performer for Coach Matt Heilman and served as the Wildcats' team captain this past season when she scored seven goals and had four assists. An All-Conference honorable mention performer as a senior, Stone twice received the team's "Wildcat Award" which goes to the player who most exemplifies the heart, dedication and commitment to Verona soccer, according to Heilman. At Eau Claire, Stone will join a Blugold team that has won WIAC championships in three of the past five years and qualified for the NCAA Division III playoffs in four of the previous five seasons. During that five-year period, the Blugolds have produced an 84-18-13 record. Stone spent the first eight years of her life in Eau Claire as the daughter of highly-successful Blugold women's basketball coach Lisa Stone, currently the University of Wisconsin Badgers' head coach. |
