ROCK ISLAND, Ill. (UWECBlugolds.com) - The UW-Eau Claire men's outdoor track and field team competed in two meets to close out the regular season and qualify competitors for next week's Division III national championship meet.

On Thursday, the team competed at UW-La Crosse in the La Crosse Last Chance before traveling to Illinois for the Augustana Last Chance meet Friday.

In La Crosse, Chris Wirtz (Sr.-Weston, Wis./D.C. Everest) automatically qualified for nationals while also setting a school record in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 8:56.98. His time was the best in the nation so far this season and more than eight seconds faster than anyone else this season.

Also on the track, Adam Flyte (Sr.-Fort Atkinson, Wis.) provisionally qualified in the 1,500-meter run, finishing in 3:54.26.

The 4x400-meter relay team also provisionally qualified with a time of 3:16.00.

In the field, Joe Lilek (So.-Tomahawk, Wis.) recorded a throw of 15.72 meters in the shot put, good for a provisional qualification.

Tyler Genovese (So.-Stevens Point, Wis./SPASH) provisionally qualified in the discus throw with a toss of 47.79 meters.

The Blugolds also competed in Friday's Last Chance meet at Augustana College (Ill.). Despite coming away with multiple individual top finishers, the team did not record any more qualifiers.

The team travels next week to Berea, Ohio for the NCAA Division III Outdoor National Championship. Baldwin-Wallace College and the Greater Cleveland Sports Commission will play hosts from May 27-29 for the meet on Tressel Field at Finnie Stadium. The national anthem is scheduled for 11:50 a.m. on Thursday with events beginning at noon.
