Women's Golf Claims Numerous Honors at Awards Banquet

CORAL SPRINGS, Fla. (UWECBlugolds.com) - The UW-Eau Claire women's golf team received a number of honors at the National Golf Coaches Association (NGCA) Division III Awards Banquet held in Howey-in-the-Hills, Fla. Wednesday.
Freshman golfer Catherine Wagner (Austin, Minn.) claimed the NGCA Division III Freshman of the Year award. Wagner is currently second on the team with an average of 79.8 strokes per round. She has finished five tournaments in fifth place or better while she tied for first at the Central College Invitational earlier this spring.
Wagner was also honored as a first team NGCA Division III All-American along with teammate Katie Maurer (So.-Forest Lake, Minn./Convent of the Visitation), who leads the Blugolds with a 78.9 stroke per round average. Maurer won medalist honors last fall at the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Championship as the Blugolds finished in first place. She has finished in first place three times this season and was in the top five a total of five times.
This is the first time two Blugolds were named First Team All-Americans in the same year. Only three other Blugolds have ever earned first team All-American honors (Jennifer Prock in 2003; Maggie Loney in 2005 and 2006; Meghan Sobotta in 2008).
In addition to All-American status, Wagner and Maurer received NGCA All-Region honors for the central region. The two were joined by teammates Torie Ives (Sr.-Osseo, Wis./Osseo-Fairchild) and Emily Swift (So.-Onalaska, Wis.). This is the third season in a row Ives was selected to the All-Region team while it was Maurer's second time named to the squad.
In addition to the honors the golfers received, head coach John Means was named the Division III SkyCaddie NGCA Regional Coach of the Year for the central region. He was joined by four other coaches as regional selections while Gustavus Adolphus College's Scott Moe was named the national coach of the year.
