Men's Tennis Splits in Final Regular Season Matches

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (UWECBlugolds.com) - The UW-Eau Claire men's tennis team went one-and-one in the final matches of the regular season at the Ade Olson Courts on Saturday.
In the first match of the day, the Blugolds swept Elmhurst College (Ill.) 9-0. At No. 1 singles, Chris Kuna (So.-Edina, Minn.) won 6-0, 6-0. Phil Loprinzi (Sr.-Rochester, Minn./Mayo)i took No. 2 singles 6-2, 6-1 while Kevin Fawcett (Sr.-Madison, Wis./Verona) won No. 3 6-2, 6-0. Lars Olson (Jr.-De Pere, Wis.) handled No. 4 singles 6-4, 6-2. Eric Wollum (Jr.-Eau Claire, Wis./Memorial) took No. 5 singles 6-1, 6-1 and Florent Marco (Fr.-Eau Claire, Wis./Memorial) won at No. 6 singles 6-1, 6-2.
In doubles play, Loprinzi and Kuna won No. 1 8-4, while Fawcett and Olson took No. 2 8-6. Wollum and Dirk Van Rybroek (So.-Madison, Wis./Edgewood) won at No. 3 8-2.
In the second match of the day, the team came up just short against Luther College (Iowa) 6-3, a team ranked ninth in the central region. Loprinzi was the only singles player to come away with a victory, taking a tough No. 2 singles match 6-1, 1-6, 6-4.
In doubles play, Olson and Fawcett took No. 2 doubles 8-6, while Wollum and Van Rybroek won a very competive No. 3 doubles match 9-8.
The Blugolds, ranked 10th in the central region, finish the regular season with a 24-6 overall record.
The Blugolds will now wait to see if they earn and at-large bid to the NCAA Division III Tournament.
