Sat, May 25, 2013 No Event(s) Scheduled For Selected Date Women's Tennis Splits at WIAC Automatic Qualifier Tournament By: Kevin Meinholz, Sports Information Director WHITEWATER, Wis. (UWECBlugolds.com) - The UW-Eau Claire women's tennis team beat UW-La Crosse 5-3 before falling to UW-Whitewater 9-0 at the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Automatic Qualifier Tournament hosted by UW-Whitewater today. The 18th-ranked UW-Whitewater Warhawks won the tournament and automatically qualified for the 2010 NCAA Division III Tournament, which will begin May 14. The Blugolds will now have to wait to see if they earn an at-large bid into the NCAA tournament. The announcement will be made in the next few weeks. The Blugolds had a tough time in doubles play against UW-La Crosse to open the day as the No. 3 pair of Megan Born (So.-Antigo, Wis.) and Taylor Heltne (Fr.-Inver Grove Heights, Minn./Simley) were the only winners. However, the Blugolds played strong in singles competition and won four of the five finished matches. Heltne gave up the fewest games as she won 6-2, 6-0 on the No. 5 spot. Gina Dahl (Sr.-Fort Atkinson, Wis.) won 6-4, 6-1 in the No. 1 spot while Born won 7-5, 6-4 at No. 3. Erin Welch (Sr.-Tomah, Wis.) played a close match at No. 4 but came out on top 6-3, 2-6, 10-8. Against the Warhawks, the Blugolds couldn't get anything going. Welch and Born had the closest matches of the day at No. 4 and No. 3 singles, respectively, but both came up short. |
