By: Kevin Meinholz, Sports Information Director
EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (UWECBlugolds.com) - For the second year in a row, the UW-Eau Claire softball team will hold its "Leave a Legacy Weekend," as they face off against UW-Stevens Point and UW-Whitewater on Saturday and Sunday at Gelein Field.
After holding a successful event last season, the Blugolds have even more exciting things plan for this year's event, which is sponsored in part by Charter Communications. Other sponsors include Adam's Automotive Center, American Fence, Americas Best Value Inn, the Chiropractic Offices of Gonstead and Stangl, Dooley's Pub and Mancino's Grinders and Pizza.
To kick off the weekend, alumni and fans are invited to attend a luncheon, catered by Mancino's, from noon to 2 p.m. Saturday at the Oak Pavilion in Carson Park. The Blugolds will then compete against the Pointers at 2 p.m., wearing pink jerseys for breast cancer awareness. A silent auction for the jerseys will be conducted at the game and will end at a gathering at Americas Best Value Inn later in the evening. The Blugolds will sign and mail the jerseys to the winner. Pink t-shirts will also be for sale throughout the weekend and the proceeds from both the silent auction and t-shirt sales will benefit Blugold softball and the Susan G. Komen organization, a global leader of the breast cancer awareness movement.
On Saturday, the Blugolds will also give away prizes and play Blugold Bingo, while the Blugold pep band will be in attendance. It will be the first time in recent years the Blugold pep band will play at a softball game. Between games of the doubleheader, Blugold softball alum will be recognized.
On Sunday, team and youth day, the Blugolds will face UW-Whitewater at noon. Area softball teams are invited to wear their playing jersey to the doubleheader. After game one, the team with the most players in attendance wearing their jerseys will win free pizzas, provided by Mancino's, which will arrive during the second game. There will also be softballs for sale for $10 throughout the day and an autograph session on the field with all the Blugold players will occur after game two.
