By: Kevin Meinholz, Sports Information Director
EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (UWECBlugolds.com) - The UW-Eau Claire softball team picked up two Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) wins over I-94 rival UW-Stout at Gelein Field today.
Eau Claire won 4-2 in game number one and came from behind in game two to record a 5-4 victory. The Blugolds are now 11-15 on the season and 3-1 in the WIAC, while holding a 4-0 record at home. Stout drops to 9-15 overall and 0-4 in conference play.
The Blugolds scored all their runs in game one in the first two innings. Katie Stalker (Sr.-Madison, Wis./La Follette), who has scored runs in eight of the last 10 games, reached on an error as the Blugolds' leadoff batter and stole two bases while picking up the team's first run after a wild pitch.
In the bottom of the second inning, the Blugolds scored three more runs to take a 4-0 lead. Emily Haluska (Fr.-Stevens Point, Wis./SPASH), Jenny Hess (Fr.-Wisconsin Rapids, Wis./Lincoln) and Stalker all scored. The Blugolds had three of their six total hits while Stout picked up two of its five total errors in the inning.
Stout closed the gap in the top of the fourth with two runs but the Blue Devils would get no closer. They left two runners on bases in the inning and managed just one hit the rest of the game, leaving one runner on base in the seventh.
In game two, while Stalker scored in the bottom of the first inning and Haluska scored in the bottom of the third, the Blugolds found themselves down 4-2 after three innings.
However, the game shifted in the Blugolds' favor in the bottom of the sixth when Bekki Kidnie (Sr.-St. Paul, Minn./Johnson) hit a two run homer to left field. Emily Muller (So.-Lancaster, Wis.) scored on the home run. The homer was Kidnie's first of the season.
Stout had an opportunity in the top of the seventh to score but two runners were left on bases in the end. The Blugolds came out strong in the bottom of the seventh inning and with the help of a Blue Devil error and an intentional walk, loaded the bases with just one out. Sara Baumgartner (Jr.-Arcadia, Wis.) then flew out to deep center field which allowed Stalker to score the winning run.
Stalker led the Blugolds on the day with four hits and four runs. She also had an RBI. Eau Claire had 17 hits in the doubleheader, including 11 in game two.
Kassie Krummel (Fr.-Walcott, Iowa/Durant) recorded the win in game one in the circle as she allowed just one hit while striking out three batters. Ashley Meinen (So.-Chippewa Falls, Wis./McDonell) started game one and pitched 3.1 innings, recording two strikeouts. Krummel started game two and pitched two innings while Jess Hegseth (Fr.-Zumbrota , Minn./Zumbrota-Mazeppa ) pitched the final five and recorded the win.
The Blugolds will be back at home Saturday and Sunday for doubleheaders against UW-Stevens Point and UW-Whitewater, respectively. Action against the Pointers will get underway at 2 p.m. Saturday.
