EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (UWECBlugolds.com) - The UW-Eau Claire men's tennis team won three dual competitions, one Friday in Minnesota and two Saturday at home, to improve to 7-2 on the season.

The Blugolds narrowly defeated Carleton College (Minn.), which is ranked 18th nationally, 5-4 at the Rochester Athletic Club on Friday. The Blugolds swept doubles competition while Phil Loprinzi (Sr.-Rochester, Minn./Mayo) and Kevin Fawcett (Sr.-Madison, Wis./Verona) earned victories in singles play to help edge the Knights. Fawcett played in the closest match in the No. 4 spot, winning 2-6, 7-6, 6-1 while Loprinzi won 6-4, 6-2 at No. 1 singles.

Saturday morning the Blugolds kicked off competition with an 8-1 win over Northwestern College (Minn.) at the Ade Olson Courts in the McPhee Physical Education Center. To end the day, Eau Claire also defeated Lawrence University 8-1 on the Ade Olson Courts.

The Blugolds used two different groups of players against both teams. Against Northwestern, the Blugolds dropped only the No. 3 singles match while they fell in the No. 1 singles match against Lawrence.

Florent Marco (Fr.-Eau Claire, Wis./Memorial) and Fawcett gave up just one game against Lawrence as Marco won 6-1, 6-0 in the No. 6 spot and Fawcett won 6-0, 6-1 at No. 4.

Facing Northwestern, Jeff Liegel (So.-Eau Claire, Wis./Memorial) lost just one game in the No. 5 spot as he won 6-1, 6-0. Marco and David Stingley (Fr.-St. Paul, Minn./Highland Park) shut down their opponent in No. 3 doubles play as the pair won 8-0.

The Blugolds will compete in five more dual competitions next weekend, three at home while another group will play twice in Pella, Iowa. At home, the Blugolds will face St. Norbert College on Friday and Loras College and Lakeland College on Saturday. In Iowa, the other group will take on Buena Vista and Central College on Saturday.
