Wed, May 22, 2013 No Event(s) Scheduled For Selected Date Men's Tennis Splits in Iowa By: Kevin Meinholz, Sports Information Director CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (UWECBlugolds.com) - The UW-Eau Claire men's tennis team split at the Clark Racquet Center today, falling 5-4 to Coe College (Iowa) to start the day and winning 9-0 to finish the day against St. Ambrose University (Iowa). The Blugolds, who are ranked 13th in the central region, are now 4-2 on the season while St. Ambrose dropped to 2-5 and Coe improved to 5-1. Coe is ranked 12th in the central region. Lars Olson (Jr.-De Pere, Wis.) was the only Blugold to sweep single's competition on the day, defeating Coe's Scott Stegemann 6-1, 1-6, 7-6 and St. Ambrose's Ryan Vretis 6-3, 6-1 in the No. 3 spot. He is now 5-0 on the season at No. 3. Eric Wollum (Jr.-Eau Claire, Wis./Memorial) had the Blugolds' largest margin of victory today, defeating St. Ambrose's Michael Harts 6-0, 6-0 at No. 5 singles. Eau Claire did very well in doubles play, winning all six matches. The No. 1 doubles pair of Phil Loprinzi (Sr.-Rochester, Minn./Mayo) and Chris Kuna (So.-Edina, Minn.) along with No. 2 doubles team of Kevin Fawcett (Sr.-Madison, Wis./Verona) and Olson won twice. Wollum and Dirk Van Rybroek (So.-Madison, Wis./Edgewood) won against Coe 8-5 while Joe Sladky (Fr.-Brookfield, Wis./MUHS) and David Stingley (Fr.-St. Paul, Minn./Highland Park) won 8-1 against St. Ambrose. The Blugolds will be back in action next weekend for three more meets. They will face Carleton College (Minn.) on Friday at 8 p.m. at the Rochester Athletic Club while opening a four-meet home stand Saturday with two meets. |
