Thu, May 23, 2013 No Event(s) Scheduled For Selected Date Men's Tennis Splits Weekend Competition in Minnesota By: Kevin Meinholz, Sports Information Director ST. PETER, Minn. (UWECBlugolds.com) - The UW-Eau Claire men's tennis team split two meets this weekend, defeating NCAA Division II MSU-Mankato 9-0 Friday while falling 5-4 against Gustavus Adolphus College Saturday at Swanson Indoor Tennis Center. Against MSU, the Blugolds lost just 14 games in all singles competition besides the No. 5 spot. In the No. 5 match, Chris Thornton (Jr.-St. Paul, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall) won a close one 7-6 (7-4), 6-2. Thornton and Chris Kuna (So.-Edina, Minn.) also played close but came out on top at No. 2 doubles, winning 9-8 (10-5). Facing Gustavus, which is ranked 25th in the nation, the Blugolds went 2-1 in doubles but were only able to pick up two wins in singles competition in the loss. Kuna won at No. 2 singles 6-4, 6-4 while Lars Olson (Jr.-De Pere, Wis.) played a close No. 3 singles match but came out on top 7-5, 1-6, 1-0 (10-6). The Blugolds are now 3-1 on the season. MSU-Mankato and Gustavus were playing in their first meet of the season. Eau Claire will head to Cedar Rapids, Iowa on Saturday for two more meets. They will face Coe College at 9 a.m. and follow that with competition against St. Ambrose at noon. |
