(UWECBlugolds.com) - The UW-Eau Claire men's and women's swimming and diving teams are both in third place out of six teams after the first day of the 2010 WIAC Championship at the University of Minnesota Aquatic Center. In the women's competition, UW-Stevens Point is in first with 274 points while UW-La Crosse has 243 in second place and Eau Claire has 241.5. UW-Whitewater currently has 99.5 in fourth place, UW-Oshkosh is in fifth with 76 and UW-River Falls has 60, in sixth place. On the men's side, the Blugolds scored 162 points while UW-Stevens Point holds the lead with 276. UW-La Crosse is in second with 262 and UW-Whitewater is in fourth with 131. UW-Oshkosh finished with 100 and UW-River Falls has 28. Two were crowned conference champions while four school records fell on the women's side. Kirsten Lickel (So.-Madison, Wis./East) won the conference title in the 200-yard individual medley with a school record time of 2:08.53, an NCAA Division III "B-cut" mark. She swam more than a second faster than the previous record, which she set last season. Nicole Dorvinen (So.-Green Bay, Wis./Bay Port) took home the WIAC title in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:05.36. Her time was also an NCAA Division III "B-cut" mark. The other three school records set tonight were in the 50-yard freestyle, the 200-yard freestyle relay and the 400-yard medley relay. Julia Olson (So.-Faribault, Minn.) finished third in 50-yard freestyle with a time of 23.93. The previous school record was set on February 17, 2000 by Jessy Kent with a time of 23.97. Olson, Casey Preissel (Jr.-Wisconsin Dells, Wis.), Hannah Ramquist (Fr.-River Falls, Wis.) and Megan Finley (Jr.-Waunakee, Wis.) set the school record in the 200-yard freestyle relay with a time of 1:36.30 as they finished in third place. The group beat the school record, set last season, of 1:37.19. Finley, Ann Grossklaus (Sr.-Rib Mountain, Wis./Wausau West), Dorvinen and Preissel took third in the 400-yard medley relay with a time of 3:59.92 on their way to setting a school record. The previous record was set on March 9, 1995 with a time of 4:01.59. The best finish in the men's competition came from Nick Badilla (Fr.-Appleton, Wis./North), who took second place in the three-meter dive with 440 points. Nick Mehring (Jr.-Eagan, Minn./Eastview) had a third place finish in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 4:42.55. Two relay teams and one individual had fourth place finishes. The Blugolds will be back in action tomorrow for day two of the WIAC Championship. Preliminaries will start at 10 a.m. while finals with start at 7 p.m. |
