Men's Tennis Kicks off Season with Two Wins

SARTELL, Minn. (UWECBlugolds.com) - The UW-Eau Claire men's tennis team kicked off its 2010 season with two 8-1 wins at Gold's Gym in Sartell, Minn. Saturday.
The Blugolds started the day against NCAA Division II opponent St. Cloud State University while they closed the day against Concordia-Moorhead.
Chris Kuna (So.-Edina, Minn.), Lars Olson (Jr.-De Pere, Wis.), Kevin Fawcett (Sr.-Madison, Wis./Verona) and Eric Wollum (Jr.-Eau Claire, Wis./Memorial) all went undefeated on the day in singles play. Kuna lost just nine games in four sets as he won in the No. 2 spot twice.
The Blugolds also won both matches in the No. 6 singles spot, with Chris Thornton (Jr.-St. Paul, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall) picking up a 6-4, 6-4 win against St. Cloud and Ben Robertson (Fr.-Plymouth, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong) losing just one game in a 6-1, 6-0 win against Concordia.
Phil Loprinzi (Sr.-Rochester, Minn./Mayo) won in the No. 1 singles spot 6-1, 6-4 against St. Cloud but fell against his Concordia opponent.
In doubles play, the Blugolds dropped just one match at No. 2 against St. Cloud. The Blugolds swept doubles competition against Concordia while Loprinzi and Kuna had Eau Claire's best win in the No. 1 spot against St. Could as the duo won 8-2.
The Blugolds will be back in action next Saturday (Feb. 13) when they travel back to Minnesota for two more dual meets. They will face Mankato State at noon in Mankato while they will wrap up the day against Gustavus Adolphus in St. Peter at 6 p.m.
