(UWECBlugolds.com) - The UW-Eau Claire women's hockey team hung tough for two periods but was defeated by UW-Stevens Point late tonight at Hobbs Ice Center. Entering the third period, the Blugolds trailed just 3-2, but with three late goals, the Pointers pulled away to take the win by a margin of 6-2. The loss puts the Blugolds at 10-8-3 on the season and 5-5-2 in NCHA play. Stevens Point improves to 11-7-2 overall and 6-4-2 in the NCHA. Midway through the first period, Stevens Point scored to go up 1-0, but at 17:05, Eau Claire's Jackie McKay (So.-Franklin Park, Ill./East Leyden) assisted Allison Malecek (Fr.-Maple Plain, Minn./Delano) for her third goal of the season to even the score 1-1 at the end of the period. Stevens Point scored two quick goals in the second and held the 3-1 lead most of the period. At 18:49, Christine Dickinson (Jr.-Layton, Utah/Shattuck-St. Mary's) scored her 13th goal of the season on a power-play. She was assisted by Beth Dittrich (Sr.-Roseville, Minn./Roseville Area) and Shannon Nelson (Sr.-Blaine, Minn.) on the play. The Pointers then scored three goals in the third to put the game out of reach. Danika Porter (Jr.-Rosemount, Minn./South St. Paul) was credited with the loss, playing all 60 minutes in the net for the Blugolds, collecting 24 saves and allowing six goals. Eau Claire finished with 27 shots on goal to Stevens Point's 30. The Blugolds were also penalized eight times for 16 minutes. They were one-for-four on power-plays on the night. The Blugolds celebrate Senior Night next Friday, February 12 at Hobbs Ice Center as they square off with Finlandia University (Mich.). The puck is scheduled to drop at 7 p.m. |
