(UWECBlugolds.com) - In its first conference matchup since 2009, the UW-Eau Claire women's hockey team tied fifth-ranked UW-River Falls 2-2 in overtime at Hunt Arena tonight. The Blugolds are now 9-5-2 on the season and 4-2-1 Northern Collegiate Hockey Association play, holding sole possession of second place in the conference. River Falls is now 7-3-2 and 2-2-1 in the conference. Eau Claire fell behind early as River Falls' Kayleigh Bell scored at 12:19 in the first. While the Falcons took the 1-0 into the first intermission, the Blugolds came out strong in the second period. Kristin Faber (Jr.-Austin, Minn.) tied the game up at 3:29 into the period on a power-play on an assist from Jackie McKay (So.-Franklin Park, Ill./East Leyden). Just over 14 minutes later, Meghan Lorenz (Jr.-Minnetonka, Minn./Wayzata) found the back of the net to give the Blugolds the 2-1 lead. Beth Dittrich (Sr.-Roseville, Minn./Roseville Area) was credited with the assist. However, with less than four minutes to go in the game, River Falls' Jamie Briski put one past Blugold goalie Danika Porter (Jr.-Rosemount, Minn./South St. Paul) to send the game into the extra period. Both teams shot just once in the five-minute overtime but neither found the net. For the game, the Falcons outshot the Blugolds 23-14. Porter stopped 21 shots while River Falls' Melissa Deardorff stopped 12. The Blugolds have tied the Falcons just three other times in history as River Falls now leads the series 25-5-4. Eau Claire will try and even out the weekend series when they once again face River Falls tomorrow at 7:05 p.m. at Hunt Arena. |
