(UWECBlugolds.com) - In two dual meets, the UW-Eau Claire wrestling team defeated Itasca Community College (Minn.) 42-9 while falling to St. Olaf College (Minn.) 27-15 at the McPhee Physical Education Center today. The win over Itasca was the first dual meet victory for the Blugolds and first-year head coach Derek Sikora. Eau Claire is now 1-12 in dual meets this season. Against Itasca, the Blugolds won eight of the 10 weight classes. Four were won by forfeit (125 pounds, 141, 149 and 174) while the others were won with a pin, a technical fall, a major decision and a decision. Joe Pitsch (So.-Oshkosh, Wis./North) won at 285, pinning his opponent in 1:44 while Brian Reier (So.-Stillwater, Minn.) picked up a victory at 133 pounds with a technical fall win of 19-2. Levi Polus (So.-Winona, Minn.) recorded a major decision victory (10-0) at 165 and Jon Ames (Sr.-Genoa, Wis./Viroqua) won 5-2 at 157 pounds. Facing St. Olaf, the Blugolds kept the score close the majority of the way with two pins and one other victory. At 184 pounds, Will Christ (So.-Shell Lake, Wis.) pinned his opponent in 2:02 while Andy Johnston (Sr.-St. Cloud, Minn./Tech) also won by pin at 149 pounds in 4:07. Keith Dawson (So.-Neillsville, Wis.) also secured a 5-3 win at 174 pounds. Up next the Blugolds will take on NCAA Division II opponent Minnesota State-Mankato in Mankato. The dual meet is set to begin at 7 p.m. Thursday. |
