Fri, May 24, 2013 No Event(s) Scheduled For Selected Date Volleyball Plans Trip to Nicaragua By: Kevin Meinholz, Sports Information Director EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (UWECBlugolds.com) - The UW-Eau Claire women's volleyball team is headed to Nicaragua to compete and also to perform community service activities over winter break. All 19 players from the Blugolds' 2009 roster will take part in the trip, which is scheduled for January 8-17. Head coach Kim Wudi and husband Jason, assistant coach Jodi Risen and husband Matt, student assistant Tim Bomgren and manager Brenna Schleif will also be in Nicaragua. The goals for the trip are to engage in the ongoing work of service/outreach organizations in Nicaragua, to learn about and experience Nicaraguan culture, and to play competitive volleyball and have a unique team bonding experience. The Blugolds will visit schools, an orphanage, hospitals and community centers to assist in ongoing community service efforts and to provide donations. Most service activities will take place in the village of San Juan del Sur. The Eau Claire community and people from the surrounding area can help in the Blugolds' efforts by donating money and/or supplies listed below, which will go to the Nicaraguan people. Donation items must be dropped off at the Athletics office by January 7. The volleyball team will also compete in five matches while in Nicaragua, with the first matches slated for January 9 against the national teams of El Salvador and Nicaragua in Managua. Three more matches during the trip will occur on January 10, 13 and 15 against Nicaragua at various locales throughout Nicaragua.
