(UWECBlugolds.com) - UW-Eau Claire men's cross country coach Dan Schwamberger announced the 2009 team award winners recently at the team's banquet. Chris Wirtz (Sr.-Weston, Wis./D.C. Everest) led the team with the most valuable runner award. It was the third year in a row he received the honor. He was second on the team at nationals with a 99th-place finish, helping the Blugolds to a 16th place finish overall. At the NCAA Regional meet, he led Eau Claire with a ninth place finish as the team took fifth. The most valuable newcomer honor was presented to Conor Rafferty (Fr.-Menomonee Falls, Wis.). He competed in six events for the Blugolds this season out of 10. His best finish came at the alumni meet as he took 12th while he took 50th at the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championship at the end of October. For the second straight year, Josh Wieland (Jr.-Menomonie, Wis.) was selected as the team's most improved runner. He competed in seven events and was one of seven runners at the national meet where he took 137th overall. Mark Sanders (Sr.-Hammond, Wis./St. Croix Central) earned this year's Blugold Award. He ran in seven events, including the national championship. Sanders took 178th overall at the national meet. Four-year letterwinner awards were presented to Brent Kann (Sr.-Rice Lake, Wis.), Ben Pearson (Sr.-Clinton, Wis.) and Wirtz. |
