Thu, May 23, 2013 No Event(s) Scheduled For Selected Date WIAC Championship up Next for Women's Golf By: Kevin Meinholz, Sports Information Director EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (UWECBlugolds.com) - This weekend the UW-Eau Claire women's golf team will compete in the 2009 Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Championship. The championship will be contested at Northern Bay Golf Resort & Marina in Arkdale, Wis., Friday through Sunday, and will be conducted over 54 holes. The Blugolds will look to contend for the title this season. Eau Claire has two of the conference's top three golfers in the conference. Katie Maurer (So.-Forest Lake, Minn./Convent of the Visitation) currently averages 78.5 strokes per round while Catherine Wagner (Fr.-Austin, Minn.) is averaging 79.3. UW-Stevens Point's Jessica Urban leads the WIAC with an average of 77.3. Last year the Blugolds finished second at the championship behind Stevens Point. Eau Claire led after the first two rounds but a weather-shortened third round left the Pointers on top by three strokes. The Pointers won with 322 strokes while the Blugolds finished with 325 after playing 45 holes. This year, Stevens Point returns just two golfers who competed at the conference championship while the Blugolds return everyone. On the individual side, Maurer will look to defend her conference crown. Maurer won individual medalist honors last year with 144 strokes, eight better than the rest of the field. Her title marked the sixth straight season a Blugold had finished first in the WIAC Championship (Susan Karlman - 2003, Maggie Loney - 2004 & 2005, Torie Ives (Sr.-Osseo, Wis./Osseo-Fairchild) - 2006, Meghan Sobotta - 2007). Golfers will take the course at noon Friday. |
