MENOMONIE, Wis. (UWECBlugolds.com) - The UW-Eau Claire women's soccer team kicked off Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) play with a 2-1 overtime victory over UW-Stout at Nelson Field today.

The goal came on a penalty kick after the Blue Devils were called for a foul in the goal box just under four minutes into overtime. Shyla Gilbertson (Fr.-Waunakee, Wis.) found the back of the net for the win, scoring her third goal of the season.

Stout (0-5-0, 0-1-0 WIAC) recorded its first goal of the season, taking the early lead on Eau Claire (2-2-1, 1-0-0 WIAC) with a goal at 27:15.

It took the Blugolds almost 40 minutes to respond to tie the game back up. At 64:58, Richelle Shannon (Jr.-Eau Claire, Wis./Memorial) scored her first goal with the Blugolds to bring the game back to 1-1.

Eau Claire finished the game outshooting the Blue Devils 17-6, including 1-0 in the overtime period. The Blugolds also had a number of opportunities near the goal with eight corner kicks on the night while Stout recorded just one.

Emily Kidd (So.-St. Paul, Minn./Como Park) played the entire game in the net for Eau Claire and recorded one save while allowing one goal. Kaitlin Arjes was in-goal the entire night and finished with four saves while giving up two goals.

Eau Claire now begins a three-game home stand this weekend. Saturday, UW-River Falls will be in town for a conference matchup at noon while Macalester College (Minn.) will come to the Bollinger Fields Sunday at 2 p.m. Next Wednesday, UW-Platteville will play the Blugolds at 4 p.m. at Bollinger.
