(UWECBlugolds.com) - With the best score on round two of the 2009 O'Brien National Championship hosted by St. Mary's College (Ind.), the fifth-ranked UW-Eau Claire women's golf team took second place out of nine teams. After their score of 311 today, the Blugolds totaled 620 strokes for the tournament. Defending national champion Methodist University won the invite with 618 strokes while St. Mary's finished third with 629. The Blugolds' Catherine Wagner (Fr.-Austin, Minn.) finished off the tournament strong and remained in second place out of 64 golfers with a score of 150. St. Mary's Martyna Mierzwa won medalist honors with 147 while two-time defending national champion Susan Martin of Methodist took third with 151. Katie Maurer (So.-Forest Lake, MN/Convent of the Visitation) moved up four spots today and finished in fifth place with 154 strokes. Maurer and Wagner received all-tournament honors at the conclusion of the tournament. Emily Swift (So.-Onalaska, Wis.) also moved up today and tied for 12th with 159 strokes while Torie Ives (Sr.-Osseo, Wis./Osseo-Fairchild) finished with 165 strokes, tied for 25th.Sara Mattes (So.-La Crosse, Wis./Central) recorded 168 strokes at the tournament to finish tied for 34th. The Blugolds will be back in action this Saturday and Sunday when they travel to Normal, Ill. for the Illinois Wesleyan Fall Classic. |
