By: Kevin Meinholz, Sports Information Director
EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (UWECBlugolds.com) - The UW-Eau Claire women's cross country team is set to open the 2009 season against collegiate competition with the Luther College All-American Invite in Decorah, Iowa on Saturday.
Ranked 10th in the latest U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association top 35 poll, the Blugolds return eight letterwinners while they lose five from a season ago. In all, 30 runners make up this year's roster. There are six seniors, seven juniors, seven sophomores and 10 freshmen on this year's squad.
Five of the women from the 2008 national team, where the Blugolds took fifth in the nation, return this year. Beth Easker (Jr.-Wittenberg, Wis./Wittenberg-Birnamwood) is the Blugolds' top returner from the national meet last year as she finished second for Eau Claire and 55th overall.
Alyssa Sybilrud (So.-Savage, Minn./Burnsville), Jenna Smith (Sr.-Robbinsdale, MN/Robbinsdale), Molly Woodford (Jr.-Waukesha, WI/South) and Hannah Humbach (Sr.-Madison, WI/Abundant Life) are the other members returning who competed in the national meet last year.
The Blugolds will also look to defend their 2007 and 2008 Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic titles this season with the strong contingent of returners.
