By: Kevin Meinholz, Sports Information Director
MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. (UWECBlugolds.com) - The UW-Eau Claire women's soccer team picked up its first win of the 2009 season tonight, defeating Augsburg College (Minn.) 1-0 tonight at Edor Nelson Field.
The Blugolds struck early with a goal from freshman Shyla Gilbertson (Waunakee, Wis.) at the 7:09 mark. It was her second goal of the season, and she is the only Blugold to have found the net so far this season. The assist was credited to Lisa Marco (So.-Eau Claire, Wis./Memorial), her first of the year.
Eau Claire (1-1-1) outshot the Auggies (1-1-2) 17-10 tonight, with nine on-goal compared to Augsburg's five. Emily Kidd (So.-St. Paul, MN/Como Park) stopped all five shots while playing the entire 90 minutes in the net for Eau Claire. Augsburg's Diana Bocklund played 45 minutes in-goal, giving up one goal while saving three, and Katie Flakne played the other 45-minute half, saving five shots.
The Blugolds are now 11-0-2 all-time against Augsburg and have won the previous four meetings.
Up next, Eau Claire will be at home to take on the 2004, 2006 and 2007 NCAA Division III national champion, and 2008 national runner-up Wheaton College (Ill.). Game time is set for 11 a.m. at the Bollinger Fields.
