(UWECBlugolds.com) - The UW-Eau Claire women's cross country team began its season on Saturday competing at the UWEC Alumni Open Meet at Lowes Creek County Park in Eau Claire. Mary Palmer, a 2009 graduate and three-time All-American for the Blugolds, defended her 2008 title on the challenging 5k course with a winning time of 19:30. The Blugolds responded with a strong 2-3-4 finish led by Hannah Humbach (Sr.-Madison, WI/Abundant Life) 19:59, Beth Easker (Jr.-Wittenberg, WI/Wittenberg-Birnamwood) 20:00, and Margaret Ho (Jr.-Wisconsin Rapids, WI/Lincoln) 20:01. Rounding out the top five scorers were Jenna Smith (Sr.-Robbinsdale, MN/Robbinsdale) sixth in a time of 20:28 and Elly Prunty (Jr.-Antigo, WI/Antigo) seventh in a time of 20:31. The Blugolds won the meet with 22 points. The women's team begins the 2009 season ranked ninth in the nation after winning Conference, Regionals and finishing fifth at the NCAA DIII Championships in 2008. Five of the women from the 2008 national team return this year including two-time Track and Field All-American Hannah Humbach who finished fith in the 3,000-meter steeplechase at the 2009 Outdoor Track and Field Championships. Also returning from the national team are Easker, Smith, Alyssa Sybilrud (So.-Savage, MN/Burnsville) and Molly Woodford (Jr.-Waukesha, WI/South). The next competition for the Blugolds is the Luther All-American Invite on Saturday, September 12th in Decorah, Iowa. |
