EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (UWECBlugolds.com) - The UW-Eau Claire women's tennis team defeated St. Norbert College today 8-1 in its 2009-2010 season opener at the Olson Outdoor Courts.

The win gives the Blugolds a 1-0 record while the Green Knights fall to 1-1. St. Norbert beat UW-Stout earlier today at UW-Eau Claire.

Against the Knights, the Blugolds only dropped a No. 1 singles match. Brenna McCormick (Sr.-Greendale, Wis.) took the No. 2 singles position as she won 6-3, 6-3 while Erin Welch (Sr.-Tomah, Wis.) only gave up two games in the No. 3 singles match, winning 6-2, 6-0. At the No. 4 spot, Megan Born (So.-Antigo, Wis.) handled the match with the 6-2, 6-0 win while Taylor Heltne (Fr.-Inver Grove Heights, Minn.) chalked up a victory in the No. 5 match with the 6-3, 6-1 win. Michelle Reinders (Jr.-Hartland, Wis./Arrowhead) finished up the singles victories at the No. 6 spot with the 7-5, 6-4 win.

The Blugolds remained dominant in the doubles competitions, sweeping all three matches. The No. 1 pair of Gina Dahl (Sr.-Fort Atkinson, Wis.) and Courtney Lynne (Sr.-Rochester, Minn./Mayo) defeated the Knights 8-4 while McCormick and Welch didn't give up a single game in their 8-0 win in the No. 2 doubles match. Emily Hiebl (So.-Wausau, Wis./East) and Heltne notched the final Blugold victory on the day with the 8-3 win in the No. 3 doubles match.

The Blugolds will pack their bags as they head to Wartburg College in Waverly, Iowa next Friday. The event is slated to begin at 4 p.m.
