EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (UWECBlugolds.com) - Picking up two more wins on the second day of the 2009 UW-Eau Claire Labor Day Classic, the women's volleyball team improved its season record to 6-0.
The No. 20 Blugolds opened the day in dominating fashion with a 3-0 victory over Judson University (Ill.), winning all three sets with scores of 25-15. Eau Claire then went on to play its first five-set match of the year in a 3-2 win over 21st-ranked Gustavus Adolphus College (Minn.).
While Eau Claire jumped out to the early lead, taking a 25-18 win, Gustavus marched back and won the next two with scores of 25-23. But the Blugolds would not give up and got back to their winning ways with a 25-19 victory and followed that with a 15-3 win in set five to remain undefeated on the year.
Emily Zupon (Jr.-Antigo, WI) led the way for the Blugolds with 10 kills against Judson while Blair Murphy (Jr.-Hermantown, MN) finished with 18 against Gustavus to lead the team. Kristen Moore (Sr.-Green Bay, WI) also recorded 12 against the Gusties.
Lindsey Smith (Sr.-Maple Lake, MN), who earned All-Tournament honors along with Liz Amici (So.-Whitewater, WI), led both matches with 10 digs against Judson and 24 against Gustavus, while Murphy and Rachel Ver Voort (Jr.-Madison, WI) also reached double-digit dig totals against Gustavus.
Leading the way with 46 assists on the day was Emily Neave (Fr.-Salem, WI). Amanda Lessner (Jr.-Watertown, WI) finished the classic with 30.
The loss dropped Gustavus' record to 2-3 while Judson fell to 1-4. Eau Claire is now 8-4 all-time against Gustavus while they are 1-0 all-time against Judson.
Next weekend Eau Claire will be on the road for the Augsburg College Tournament. Action is set for Friday and Saturday. The Blugolds will open with Macalester College (Minn.) at 4 p.m. Friday.
