EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (UWECBlugolds.com) - After kicking off the season with two wins earlier this week, the UW-Eau Claire volleyball team won another pair on the opening day of its 2009 Labor Day Classic in the McPhee Physical Education Center today.
The 20th-ranked Blugolds swept the competition, defeating the College of St. Scholastica 3-0 (25-14, 27-25, 25-22) in the first match and followed that with a 3-0 victory over UW-Stout with scores of 25-19, 25-14, 25-18.
While Eau Claire had its way against its opponents most of the night, St. Scholastica gave the Blugolds a scare in the second set of match one. With the Saints up 24-21, the Blugolds had to battle back and eventually prevailed 27-25.
Liz Amici (So.-Whitewater, WI) and Emily Zupon (Jr.-Antigo, WI) each recorded double-digit kill totals with 10 a piece while Amanda Lessner led the Blugolds with 27 assists against St. Scholastica. As a team, the Blugolds finished with a .264 hitting percentage while the Saints recorded a .131 percentage.
In match two against the Blue Devils, who came into the contest undefeated on the season, Eau Claire hit .205 compared to Stout's .000. Eau Claire finished with 39 kills while Stout finished with 18.
Amici led the way for Eau Claire once again with eight kills while Lindsey Smith (Sr.-Maple Lake, MN) finished with 10 digs. Lessner again finished with a team-high 19 assists, and Emily Naeve (Fr.-Salem, WI) added 16.
The Blugolds are now 19-3 all-time against the Saints and 58-28 all-time against the Blue Devils.
The Labor Day Classic will wrap up tomorrow with five more matches. Eau Claire will kick off the day with action against Judson University (Ill.) on court one while UW-Stout and St. Scholastica will be on court two. Both matches are set to start at 10 a.m.
