(UWECBlugolds.com) - While the UW-Eau Claire soccer team led for the majority of its season opener against the University of St. Thomas (Minn.), a late goal by the Tommies helped hand the Blugolds a 2-1 loss today at the Bollinger Fields. The Blugolds were the first to get on the board with Shyla Gilbertson (Fr.-Waunakee, Wis.) scoring her first collegiate goal at 19:55. Rachel Nerison (So.-Maple Grove, Minn.) assisted on the goal. After leading for more than 66 minutes, the Blugolds gave up a goal at 86:11 to even out the score at 1-1. Cailee Osterman was credited with the goal while Lexie Fisher assisted. With momentum going into overtime, St. Thomas controlled with three shots, including the one that sealed the deal for the Tommie victory. With just over two minutes to go in the first overtime, Cailee Osterman netted the game-winning goal. The Blugolds were only able to get off one shot in the extra period. The last time the two teams met at the Bollinger Fields, the Blugolds came out on top with a 2-1 victory on a goal in the 86th minute of play. Last year the two teams played to a 0-0 tie in St. Paul. The Tommies now lead the all-time series 6-5-2. The Blugolds will now prepare for another contest against a Minnesota team. They will head to St. Joseph, Minn. for a game against the College of St. Benedict on Saturday. Game time is set for 1 p.m. |
